majority average Portugal squad

Portugal has a way better midfield than Argentina. Carvalho is underrated and was amazing during the Euro's.

i do. he's such a whiny little pussy, with a terrible attitude. he can't be counted on for shite. he's undeniably a fantastic player, but he's also a prime loser.

Look at what Ronaldo does with that majority average Portugal squad. He is fricking unreal. He basically willed Portugal to a tie single handedly against Spain. Who does that? The GOAT, that’s who.

I don’t know what Ronaldo would do with this Argentina team, though. They’re awful, less than the sum of their parts, and really have been for awhile.

At least Portugal gets Ronaldo the ball. I watched a good bit of this match, and didn’t see Messi dribbling until it was 3-0.

Argentina has had Di Maria during this run. He was just in poor form this World Cup. He also has Rojo and Aguero on his team. I’d take Argentina minus Messi over Portugal minus Ronaldo every day of the week in terms of pure talent.

He's awesome, but he's not the GOAT. I don't think it's vitriol. I think it's people tired of fans downing Ronaldo all of the time when Messi can't show up on the international stage. At least that's it for me.

Well, CR7 demands more of Portugal. Messi doesn’t really have that same alpha personality.

i think it's just an explosion from CR7 fans with the Messi/CR7 switch that's occurred the psat 3-4 years

Yeah CR7's runs in the CL have catapulted CR7 in the debate despite the fact he's gotten more reliant on service as he's aged. Messi has dropped deeper and has been unbelievable, but he now relies on people running for him and getting him the ball in dangerous positions.

member when Barca "did it the right way" and that's all we heard for like 3 straight years? they even paid Unicef to wear them on their jerseys! just a lot of cheeky arrogant stuff for years that now is in a 180 and people are just enjoying schadenfreude

I liked that era even though Barca destroyed Arsenal on the regular. Give me weird looking DLP's of Romani origins any day.

This is because Ronaldo demands the ball.

Messi is too much of a beta personality to do so. He likes to spread it around and not be selfish when that is probably the worst thing possible for the team.

Argie's coach is an absolute fricktard. no way in hell do I take off Aguero for Higuain in the 52' without at least attempting 2 up top down a goal.
geez. terrible decisions all around.
Croatia was very good. Rakitic and Modric were excellent all night.

Messi has also been irrelevant in UCL for the past three years while Ronaldo is closing in on his mid 30's and still wrecking shite.

My view is that the team with the best DLP usually does well in big tournaments, and in general it holds true. Argentina wishes they had a player like Carvalho. Banega might be that sort of DLP, but they keep calling players like Biglia who is terrible. Even a player like Nestor Ortigoza, who was amazing during the Copa 2011 for Paraguay, would be useful for Argentina.
