App building question for AI users in here

So as a hobbyist I started using Claude to build a drug/alcohol recovery app that I feel is better than most of what I see on the app market. Im not personally in recovery but my mother, brother, and several other family members are, so the project is dear to me and I’ve had a ton of exposure to the field
At the end of the day, there will be a modestly priced version though partly because a couple of the features have scaling operating costs and if I make a few dollars thats cool too
But my question is a bit more philosophical in that with the rate of AI development, will people even keep paying for apps when, when every AI model that comes out, its increasingly simple to build custom apps so that a child could even do it
It’s something I’ve been thinking about a good bit recently as I get close to 2 months work on the project and there’s obviously some cost involved as well. The floor is rapidly shifting beneath our feet in the tech world and I can envision a day soon where just about anyone crafts custom apps for themselves with just a few prompts

It will be a tax on people without the right mindset, but so is paying for an oil change.
People with average and lower IQs also won't be able to do this well, so they'll still have about half the market
*ETA: how are you handling the hosting?

Fair point. One thing that keeps driving with my app specifically is there’s a community/connectivity component to this specific app, so it’s a bit different than building a calorie counting app in 30 seconds
The app itself is local on users' phones. nothing to host there. Builds go through EAS
Supabase for the backend. Postgres database, auth, and edge functions. Fully managed, serverless. The app itself is built with Expo

We might not even use apps in the future. Imagine an Agentic OS on your phone where you simply ask for help with your sobriety. It could find and sign you up for meetings, manage your schedule, and use GPS to keep you away from old triggers. It could proactively freeze your credit card at liquor stores, block enabling contacts, and even alert your support system if you’re heading toward a relapse. At that point, the phone itself becomes the intervention.

So there's the anonymity part of the respective programs. What has your market research shown you for trends of apps and why is yours different?
Your perspective is one of an affected family member, not that of an alcoholic/addict. Im sure there are many apps out there made and supported by those in recovery; those not looking to make a penny, but being of service to the still suffering.
You're on point with AI and anyone can make an app now. Please dont take my response as lashing back or negative, just providing a simpleton's opinion

I think expensive SAAS platforms will be hit pretty hard. A lot of companies pay huge subscription costs for a CRM like Salesforce and they only need a small percentage of the feature base.

This is very close to the future I envision

I do think large-scale SAAS is in trouble and I'm so happy. This started the subscription model that's taking over everything in life.

But AI is SaaS

$20/month to replace $800/month? I'll take it.
There are also free versions of AI floating around. China is going to flood the market with them to sink our tech sector.

quote:If that type of trade works out, sure, but if we all start using the type of resources (currently) required to build custom apps to replace all our services, $20/month probably won't be enough. Devs who use AI can run up bills in the hundreds easily, and that's by giving smart prompts. If a billion dummies start tossing around shitty prompts it can get expensive.

Exactly. Web2 set the internet back so far that we finally have a perfect use for cloud resource sharing and people don’t trust it.
I don’t care. I send free openrouter models pics of me naked almost every day.
