re: Board opinion: Best IT places to work in BR

I am in IT consulting, so I work with a lot of IT shops in the area. The culture in many of them are on the decline and there's a real race-to-the-bottom mentality that is spreading. Many shops are trying to get experienced talent with skills in many different areas for what would be below average salaries in other cities. Often they wind up just getting someone cheap or inexperienced who over-sold themselves and limp along like that, flying by the seat of their pants.
Another problem we are seeing is that some of the bigger shops, especially SLEDs, are hiring consulting firms like Deloitte, who sell them on the latest trend which is "project managers". Best case scenario they convert IT folks into project managers and after a year or so they have too many chiefs and not enough Indians to do the work. Worst case scenario their project managers are severely disconnected and out of touch with the technical side. Works out well for us once they start outsourcing due to delays.
There's just not enough to go around in a city with a large university. Every job we post gets 20+ legitimately qualified applicants and many of them are unemployed. I've lost two employees to out-of-state recruiters in the past year (Dallas and ATL). They both nearly doubled their pay compared to what they made here and that's saying something because we poached both of them from other places.

In short: BR employers don't pay well. IBM came here to take advantage of that fact

Lulz..We spent 12 million last year on just a few offices upgrades...Some of the doors I walked through consulting in BR haggled over 3k servers..

Just because you work for a corporation IN BR, doesn't mean they are based out of here..

That comment was irrelevant. Every employer I have previously had is based out of BR. I currently work for big oil.

I worked under Patrick Thompson at Amedisys and also worked for a few years at Sparkhound. There is no better place to work in BR than Sparkhound. The culture there is incredible and unlike any place I have ever worked. Patrick Thompson isn't going to change that.

Then why did you put it..?
I was simply pointing out that "No one in BR pays well" argument you played..It isn't always true..

Have you ever worked for Sparkhound? If so you would know how important culture is there. There is nobody above that.

Envoc has a bad rep.
I think Geocent is pretty legit.

Why do people from Amedisys continue to get hired elsewhere for promotions, given how terrible Amedisys is?
I have a client where one of the top IT decision makers is from Amedisys and he is very difficult to help. Stuck in 2004, refuses to accept that things change and is inflexible in general.

Threads like these make me realize how screwed I am if I ever lose my current job.

Me too. I've got nothing for server work experience and would be lost if I had to do that shite.. I'm very network focused. Outside of the ISPs around here I'm probably screwed if I ever lost my job
I guess it would finally motivate me to move to Austin like I've wanted to for the last few years..

They can afford you...they just won't pay you what you think you are worth.
I left BR years ago to work for one of my clients in Raleigh. When I moved back to BR, I took a 25k pay cut. Now that I'm in TX, I'm making more again. BR IT jobs for the most part just pay shite.
