I'm thinking I will buy Top Gun: Maverick. I don't have Paramount+, which is where I expect it to stream. I don't really use blu ray or DVDs anymore, I don't think I even have anything set up to play them.

So, someone educate me on digital media, like I'm a noob.

I have Amazon Prime and use a firestick (also have a Roku, as backup).
Is the best means to buy, to buy on Prime? If so, would that show up on the Roku (in the Prime account), my PCs, etc?

Is there a cheaper option than $20 (price on Prime), and would it be worth a buck or two to get it that way, instead (I suspect not)?
I guess, if I order it on Vudu etc, I have to run Vudu too. Or Plex, etc.

It will be available for rent in a couple of months if you feel like waiting.

Yeah... I almost bought it last night, for the purpose of watching it again right then. It was 10:45 at night

It's a film I saw on the big screen several times, something I rarely do. And I imagine I would watch probably weekly, for a month or 2. I legit would binge this the way I did LOTR, Star Wars, Avengers, etc.

Sounds like a good time to get a NAS, Plex, VPN and learning how to torrent…

I did torrents going back to Napster and Limewire, used to rip movies using stuff from Afterdawn.

I'm not interested in stealing this, I'm asking about legit purchasing, and what is considered the best/most efficient way, thanks.

Very rarely do I need to buy a movie, but when I do, I use Amazon.

Just buy it on prime. That's where I buy most of my movies.

The actual best way to do it legit is to buy the UHD Bluray and rip it to digital (and put it on a Plex server or something). That way you have the file always and forever, and you can control how you watch it always and forever.

Anything else, and you're just paying for the privilege to stream it.

I use Vudu because they support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.

Yeah, issue with that is the physical media doesn't ship until November.
And I've lost physical media before, including hard drives. I've got a scratch on my Avengers Infinity War bluray.

Anyhow, thanks for input, and I made my choice. Amazon, and I just finished watching in UHD. Looked and sounded great.
Dang, I was searching for bonus content. Don't see that with Amazon; I think Vudu was offering it free.

Ah.... well, in that case, personally I would pirate it until November.

But I understand you're looking for something convenient and now and why you made the choice you did to get it off of Amazon.

I use both physical media (4K UHD discs only, now) and streaming, along with redeeming codes for digital or sometimes outright purchases on digital.

The thing I have also done which makes the digital the most flexible is set up a Movies Anywhere account, then go into that and link it to Apple, Amazon, Vudu etc. stores. That way, most of the time (definitely not 100% but maybe 90%?) when I have a digital purchase it's available on any of the streamers.

But I tend to do most of my purchasing on Apple / iTunes for one big reason - they will automagically upgrade you from HD to 4K if the current purchase is not 4K. I have several 4K titles now, that I did not buy in 4K. That's pretty cool and helps future proof the library some.
