Are you worried about calling them, or them calling you? Do you have a Google Voice number? Hangouts Dialer lets you use the app to call using your GV #. So if you are calling your parents, your GV # would show up on their caller ID. If you are worried about them calling you, maybe look into forwarding your T-Mobile number if unanswered to your GV #.

This. I was in the middle of nowhere IL for work a few months ago with zero cell coverage on TMobile. GV and hangouts dialer worked like a charm over WiFi. The other users don't need hangouts.

This and this... CAD Surprised you don't already know about Google Voice with Hangouts since you seem to be a big pusher of google docs and sheets.... thought you were all about the google.

I don't Google voice because it seemed a half baked solution. Maybe I should revisit my stance

Is there a simple guide for this? I don't want another phone number.

Well you can port your number to be your google voice number, but this might not be the best solution. It might be tricky to port your number without having your T-Mo account get closed. If you are going to change carriers anyway, it might make sense to port your current number to GV, then set up a new number that you forward your GV number to.

I think you should look into forwarding your current number to GV after a few rings. Then you wouldn't need to remember or give out your GV number.

Call forwarding
Call forwarding allows you to forward your incoming calls to another number. Not only can you set it up to forward all your calls immediately, you also have other options. You can also set it up to forward if you don't answer the call, if your phone is turned off, or if you're out of signal range.

Be aware of the following when using call forwarding:

You can't forward calls to international numbers.
You can only forward calls to 10- or 11-digit numbers.
Forwarding while roaming depends on the host country's network capabilities.

To set up call forwarding, visit the Phones page. Select your phone, then go to Calls > Call forwarding to view the steps.

i'll dig into this. so would that work if i'm not getting tmo service at all?

in other words, if a call is placed and my number isn't in range..would it go to google voice so my phone would still ring via nearby wifi?

Looks like it: LINK

Answer Google Voice calls in Hangouts

Incoming calls appear as Hangouts notifications instead of ringing on your mobile phone. Answer a call by touching the notification or swiping it on the lock screen. If your screen is passcode-protected, you'll have to unlock it first.

If you want your phone to ring rather than send you a Hangouts notification, you can forward your Google Voice calls directly to your mobile phone. To change your forwarding number, go to your Google Voice settings.

ok, its kinda working.

i have it set to forward to my google voice number after 10 seconds..and then tried turning off the phone radio on my phone and leaving wifi running.

however, after 10 seconds it simply goes to voicemail. it doesnt forward the call/ring to my phone.

how do i get it to forward the CALL, not the VOICEMAIL?

Open the Hangouts Dialer app, and go to settings. There's a check box for incoming phone calls. "Ring Hangouts for incoming phone calls made to your Google Voice number."

that did the trick!!

well shite, now i don't think i need tmobile wifi calling at all.

one last question - google voice app i installed on my phone but i don't think i need it. seems redundant to what hangouts does and is causing me to have duplicate notifications.

do you use that?

I don't have my voicemail going to hangouts, just to google voice. I'm wondering if google is planning on phasing out the google voice app and have everything done in hangouts.

I hope you're still going to get to keep that sweet Asus router that tmo sent you.

yeah i am..but i am having them send a signal booster thinking i couldnt use the router and now that i can..i need to send the signal booster back

so confused.

also i set this :

*#61# SEND < -- displays alternate phone number you will divert all calls to if NO REPLY after X seconds
**61*[your google voice number]*11*20# SEND <-- will divert your incoming call to google number after 20 seconds if unanswered/out of range

on my phone so if it rings my cell for 20 seconds and no answer it goes ahead & rings the google number automatically rather than jumping to voicemail to see if i'm around.

now i'm trying to figure out why i can MAKE calls using the nexus 7 but it wont ring.

my nexus 5 rings (even if in airplane mode with wifi on) but try as i might..the N7 just sits there if the nexus 5 is off and eventually the google number goes to voicemail.

they could make this a little easier....

If they're not charging you for the cell booster, you should keep it. I have an ATT cell booster that they sent me for free. It basically connects to my home network and I get full bars at home. My calls technically go thru my home internet connection. I got it because I was tired of not having service at my house.

Anyway, I still use google hangouts/voice when I work from home and need to join conference calls. Been a google voice customer since before google bought it and it was called grandcentral.

Did you change the app settings on N7 also, or just the N5? The app settings might be device specific.

the 'use hangouts to answer calls' option was already checked on my N7 when i went to prferences which is interesting because i had just made the change about 10 minutes earlier on my phone.

i'm guessing that option travels with you to different devices that share that google account.

i rather thought this thread was educational in establishing a seamless handoff to enable wifi phone call reception without being tied to a particular cell carrier.
