Alaska for a Weekend Pt. 2 (Juneau?)

Hope everyone's having a great weekend
. Nearly a year ago I posted on here about being interested in taking my first trip up to Alaska. Per the board's guidance I made my way to Sitka and had a great Friday night-Monday morning trip Labor Day weekend. Truly a spectacular first visit to AK LINK
Was just browsing flights and again I'm finding pretty cheap flights up to Alaska for early September. $160 to Juneau, $245 to Anchorage, $238 to Fairbanks, $229 to Sitka. Google flights
Given hitting up Sitka last year, does a quick weekend in Juneau fit the bill for this year? I know there's the Mendenhall glacier plus hopefully I can find some salmon fishing and explore downtown Juneau? That's probably enough to keep me occupied for 2 full days. Likely a solo trip unless I can push someone else to join. Thanks for the help

Salmon fishing would be kind of spotty, there would be Silvers running though.
Lots of awesome trails here. You can spend 3-4 days hiking and never leave the downtown area. Most breweries and bars are downtown. The Alaskan brewery is not, neither is Forbidden Peaks.
Lots of restaurants and coffee shops. Downtown can be touristy though, but it should be slower in Sept.

Thanks for the heads up on salmon. I know I was at the tail end of the season last year on labor day but still managed to limit out on silvers.
So you'd recommend staying downtown and not anywhere else? It's looking like $175/night for most places so debating holding off a bit longer to get a cheaper rate. I think most cruises will probably be done by that time so tourism should be slower. Rental car or public transportation? I can get decent rental car discounts now so price isn't an issue as compared to last year.
I'm either coming up labor day weekend so I don't have to take a day off work or the following weekend

If you want to go whale watching take the boat from Juneau that circles Shelter Island. The scenery is beautiful and we saw more whales than we could count.
And Mendenhall Glacier is a must see. If it is not the most spectacular glacier around it is certainly the most impressive one you can drive to.

Well, depends on the things you want to do. Some nice B&Bs around town and the airport is 10 miles from downtown. If you don't mind bus hopping or uber/lyft.
Douglas is a good place if you don't mind airBnB or an actual BnB.
Usually bears at Steep Creek at the Mendenhall Glacier through September. They fish for sockeye in the stream.

Local guy shot this just between Shelter and Douglas Islands. Best orca footage I have ever seen.

My favorite place in town is Eagle Beach. Consider a day trip to Tracy Arm if the weather is nice. Its spectacular.

Yes. We didn’t see the sea lions meet such a fate but that was the best whale watching excursion I have been on and I have been on a few.
The most scenic and the one with the most abundant sea life was Kenai Fiord out of Seward.

$450 from New Orleans. Not bad. Its tempting.

No doubt. The only downside there is the sea swells. But with calm seas, its spectacular

Yeah. The day we went to Kenai Fiord the whole boat got seasick. I would like to go back some day when the water is calm.

Does Juneau have Uber or Taxi available?
Is renting a car a must.

Uber, Lyft and a couple other ride shares, but the locations are limited. To get out of town and drive up Lynn Canal, you'll need an expensive cab ride or a rental car. The road goes 40 miles north of downtown, but most ride services only go as far as the Ferry Terminal, at 11 mile.
Cabs do tours at a flat hourly rates, they can take you out there. It is economical with more than one person. City bus can get you to most populated areas, but drops off 1.25 miles short of the Mendenhall Glacier area. Its an easy walk though.

As awesome as that experience was, I had to stop watching after about 3 minutes. I can only listen to someone say “holy shite” 347 times in an hour before my head explodes, and they made it to 313.
Seriously, I understand that this was an absolute beast of a special moment but couldn’t he think of anything else to say other than holy shite over and over and over? It reminds me of those Muslims that say allahuakhabar on repeat when they see something they like.

I never listen to whale watch videos with the sound on. Its much more enjoyable muted.

The only time i've done it with decent seas was the last day of September one year. Usually stormy, but was flat calm in the bay and smooth in open water. Just incredible experience.
I've also been there when the ship should have canceled but didn't, and the entire trip most people were miserable. Glacier Bay National Park is about 50 miles from Juneau, similar glaciers but in sheltered areas. Real calm.
Tracy Arm is a fjord about 40 miles South of JNU, there are day boats that do it, one of my favorite areas I've ever been. There's twin Fjords, Endicott Arm is the other and its not visited as much, but equally spectacular. Fords Terror is a little place in Endicott that is scary as heck when the tide is ripping.

Sounds good Roger.
Booked for week after Labor Day. Planning on a helicopter glacier tour and whale watching. Maybe a ride up the tramway and hike to the peak(Gastineau?). Just 4 days in town so just do what we can and spend a day walking around day drinking.

Staying downtown?
Hike up Perseverance, and up Granite Creek. Only about 4-5 hours round trip. You can access Mt Juneau ridge from there if you are in good shape.
Mt Jumbo on Douglas is another good hike/climb. Its usually doable in August after the snow melts on the trail. My place is a block from the State Capitol bldg, Downtown is really easy to get around.

Staying downtown. Sheraton. I liked it because it had seaside view.
Posted on 7/14/22 at 5:20 pm to Nodust
Go eat at the Hanger on the Wharf. It will be the big blue bldg across the street. My office from 1995-2000 was in the Seadrome, right across the street from the hotel. The Hanger was the original hanger for Alaska Coastal Airlines, which became Alaska Airlines.
Sheraton is the bright 7 floor hotel on the left of the pic.
McGivneys sports bar in the hotel has some decent bar food. Seems like they are short on service though, its always packed.
Adventure Bound is across the Street from the hotel in the Seadrome. They do day trips to Tracy Arm, and are the best in the business if you want to spend a day on the water.
