We are flying American Airlines when we return to MSY from the Bahamas next week with a connection in Charlotte. AA is offering us an upgrade with free checked bags on the second leg from Charlotte to MSY. Do any of you have experience that if we do this upgrade will we not have to pay baggage fees for our first leg from Bahamas to Charlotte? Thanks in advance!

You don't have to pay on the first leg if you upgrade the second leg. I usually did this on quick flights like MSY-DFW for ski trips on my way to Colorado or out West

EXP here.
As long as ONE of your legs is upgraded, you’ll get the priority tags and three checked bags for free for the entire trip.
Before I hit status it was soften cheaper to upgrade a flight than it was to check 3 bags (tools and gear)

If you fly AA often, that AAdvantage credit card they hawk on the flights gives a you and a number of companions a free checked bag on domestic. The card is $99 a year, but one round trip for a couple is $120 in bag fees saved.

I've been thinking of getting an AA card. I have a Southwest card and have gotten to Companion status for 21, 22, and already for 23 so my wife and I fly free on Southwest. This trip is to Grand Exuma in the Bahamas and it would have been a big hassle to try to fly Southwest, especially coming home. I'm thinking of getting the AA card just to use in instances like this or to rack up some points once I hit companion status on my Southwest card.
