Kicking around some ideas for a New Years trip. London has entered the convo. Mrs jkyle has been before and loves it. Any of y’all made the trip ? Enjoyed it ? Things to do ?

London is one of my favorite cities that I’ve visited.

Would you rent a car ? What were some of your favorite things ? Is a train ride to Paris worth the time for a day or 2 ? I’ve never been to either.

No, I wouldn’t rent a car. Take the tube or taxis. Grab a reservation at St. John Smithfield. Paris is a trip in and of itself, personally I think you’re better off using that time to deeper explore London.

It’s so crowded and so expensive. Just know that going in. I usually stay near Oxford Circus but with the tube you have great options all over the city. The British Museum is great as is the British war museum. Great restaurants everywhere . The usual tourist spots, Day trips to places like the Cotswolds etc.

I was there around this time exactly 15 years ago. Some of the stuff we toured included:
Tower of London
Westminster Abbey
Hampton Court
Shopping in Piccadilly Circus
If I remember correctly, we stayed in the east end of London, near the docklands, and we took a train to town, as well as the Underground

I use to go to London several times a year. One of my favorite cities in the world.

All suggestions so far are good. Add day trips to Bath, Brighton and Windsor as possible things to do. We always stay in Mayfair.

Appreciate the replies so far. We’ve kinda narrowed our New Years trip down to three choices
1.ski trip to Whistler / Vancouver for a couple days
2. Italy (rome. Maybe Florence & Venice)
3 . London (possibly train to Paris for 2 days ).
I’ve never been to any of them.
Things to note :
Duration of 7-8 days.
We like outdoor activities and scenery although it will be over New Years and cold so a lot of that will prob be out. (Unless of course we choose to ski)
I love history and places I’ve seen in movies and stuff
Love good food and unique dining experiences
Don’t care at all about bars and nightlife (recovering alcoholic lol)

Can’t beat Whistler bro. Although they will see you roasted chestnuts on the street in London.

I've been to London a handful of times.
As others mentioned, public transportation is very good there so no need to rent a car unless you have some specific need or like the flexibility.
While London has a lot to offer, I do suggest spending a few days in London but make plans to explore some of the surrounding cities if time allows. Bath, Windsor, Salisbury, Deal, Canterbury, etc. These are all relatively easy day trips from London and offer a lot of sightseeing and historical places to enjoy.

1. I don't ski, so that's not a trip I'd take
2. Italy: a repeat favorite of mine, and a country full of regions. Rome/Florence are a good comb0 for 7/8 days, and maybe add a town between the two. Hauling all the way to Venice wastes too much of a short trip, IMHO, but I'm a traveler who prefers longer immersion in a specific place rather than rushing around checking sites off of a list.
3. London: another repeat favorite of mine, with more than enough history, art, culture, etc to fill 7-8 days without leaving the city.
--definitely don't rent a car, completely unnecessary
--consider staying on the SouthBank/Southwark area, home to a riverside promenade and cool stuff like Borough Market, the Globe theater, and actual Londoners, not just tourists.
Again, I'd not take the side trip to Paris, but I've been to Paris plenty. If you run out of things to do/see in London, you can take day trips via train out of the city:
--Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Palace, Greenwich Observatory & the maritime museum & the Cutty Sark, all are pretty close & worth your time.
Slow your roll and soak in a place. Go out and find breakfast with the locals, feel a place wake up--ditto for the nightlife. No need to scurry about, marking off sights on your bingo card of life.

Good information. I really appreciate it. Paris would sorta be just checking that off the list like you mentioned. I won’t completely rule that out yet (my wife is big on the paris idea and I often get accused of taking over and not letting her have any say ) but I do appreciate the feedback. International travel isn’t something I get to do that often and also a trip without the kids. I will say upon doing more research the fireworks/festivities for New Year’s Eve in London look VERY cool.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

If wife wants to go to Paris, why not just go to Paris? Rent an apartment in the Marais, or St Germain, play at being a local for a week, with some side trips into the countryside (Reims, Chartres, or Rouen, for example).
The 2.5 hrs on paper from London to Paris does not account for the time spent checking out of hotel & schlepping bags to St Pancras station, then getting from the Gare du Nord to your hotel w/bags. Easily 3-4, depending on traffic, your chosen mode of transport, and time of day. If you adore trains & have always wanted to travel thru the Chunnel, then maybe it's the thing for you.
But if you REALLY want to hit both cities, make it an 8-day trip and fly open jaw (into London and home from Paris, taking the train between). Spend 4 days in each city....

Good idea on the triangle flight. She def wants to do both cities. I would be okay either way. I’m a little more interested in London although I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing both. Thanks again for the good info.

That restaurant you mentioned above … is that the place you’ve said you got that beef pie that you liked so much ?

The beef and kidney pie with bone marrow - yes! It's incredible.

I have been to London several times and love it. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that I like Paris and Italy better.

We did the Tower of London thing, and rode the London Eye. I can't remember everything we did in London, it was more of a hub for branching out. We went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester and then spent a week in Wales.

London is a great city. Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London is fun, lots of history- you have to sign up in advance. See a play in historic theatre. Rental car is not needed.
