That’s terrible advice, FTR. Exercise extreme caution in Guatemala. For both theft and violent crime it’s pretty damn risky . It has one of the highest murder rates in the world - rip 10 in fact. And tourists are hardly immune. It’s actually gotten a pretty bad reputation lately , which is a shame because the country and people are lovely. It’s not El Salvador but it’s not great either.

My kids have said they would like to go to these sites but I have no idea if they are safe or not. If it was just me, that’s one thing, but getting kids involved takes it to a different level.

Last time I went to Mexico was in 08/09 on a basic carnival cruise to cozumel. One of the excursions was to ruins and everything seemed pretty safe for travelers. I got to talking to one of the guides as the cartel violence was a known issue to Americans back then, and he basically said there was a mutual agreement between cartels and Mexican government to keep the drugs/violence out of tourist heavy destinations. He said that if anyone stepped foot outside of any major resort town/tourist area, anything was fair game though. Granted this was 12+ years ago, so not sure how true it still is. I haven't heard of any major violence in a tourist spot besides one I believe in Puerto Vallarta about 7 or 8 years ago.

I went to Chichen Itza and Uxmal a few years ago and stayed a night in Merida. I didn’t see anyone with guns and nothing seemed unsafe.

My BIL was robbed by 6 people last week in southern Mexico, was set up by driver from airport, but not in the Yucatan. It can happen anywhere.
