Hello all, we (wife, 6 yo, 3 yo, 16 month old) will be spending three nights in Berchtesgaden before driving to Vienna for four nights in late July.

Does anyone have any "must see" things in between Salzburg and Vienna? We plan on driving through the Wachau Valley (wife and I did the bike ride from Melk to Krems years ago) and are looking for more stops/things to see en route.

Also, beyond Schonbrunn and Prater, are there any sights for kids that would be must dos? We plan on bringing them to some of the cafes, but are looking for at least one kid friendly event a day.

You can leave Salzburg on the highway but exit at Melk. There is the famous abbey there. We just viewed the outside.

Then drive the rest of the way to Vienna on the road that runs along the bank of the beautiful blue Danube which is beautiful although it is a greyish green color. The drive takes you through the picturesque wine country.

One of my bucket list places to visit is Hallstatt, Austria. Look it up. Hopefully, you can find time to visit.

Hallstatt would qualify as a good spot to get to if you have the time. The 6 y/o would certainly enjoying riding down the salt mine slides after you take the funicular up to the mine. IMO, it's better to stay the night, but I suppose if you have a car you might be able to make the day work.

Do y'all have a rodelbahn scheduled along the way? I'm sure the kids would love one or two, and having a car helps to find them.

Also, I see you're staying in Berchtesgaden, but don't sleep on Salzburg. World class city, if a bit touristy. Take the kids up to the fortress, stroll Getreidegasse and end the day at the Augustiner garten at the other end of town.

Have fun!

Bring the kids with you to the outdoor wine taverns in the vineyards circling Vienna. They can run and play in the rows of vines while you and the Mrs enjoy a crisp Gruner.

We went to Salzburg and the salzkammergut (lakes region including Halstatt) for four nights last may. It really is wonderful. The lakes area East of Salzburg is way underrepresented in lists of things to see in Europe.

Any heuriger you particularly recommend? Sounds perfect, though she will opt for the zweigelt.
