Because your elected officials, and mine for that matter, voted to defund it.

Congratulations. I am on a slow 7 year retirement plan. Next two years work as normal, figure out retirement finances with last kid graduating college this year, avoid stressful projects at work. Then the next five years after that I'll be slowing down at work to a part time position, traveling a lot and making sure we can live within our retirement budget. Then retire fully as long as all is going well.
More likely, something at work will piss me off and I will retire earlier than this plan.

Had the same thing but it was Creole Country brown rice. Black residue floated to top during cooking. Cooked rice tasted a bit different but not bad. Thinking must be a fungus.
Ian McNulty is legit, but he is New Orleans not BR.
In the 80s this was just another Thursday night.

Another old line NOLA law firm closing up

From Millinglaw.com site:
Dear Clients,
After 130 years of practicing law in the State of Louisiana, the law firm of Milling Benson Woodware, L.L.P. has closed its practice of law and will cease providing professional services, effective as of 5 PM, February 18, 2026. After that time the firm will no longer represent you or other clients in any matters, cases or files...

re: What was your life like in the year 1998?
Posted by vistajay on 2/18/26 at 1:33 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
Had moved back to New Orleans, had a one year old child, a better job and had just bought my first house in Old Metairie. Life was great. Trajectory was up.

The Remington is a cool place to stay and cost the same as Hilton. The artist suites are nice. It also has a very nice bar. If you like beer I'd uber to Great Raft or 7th Tap.
Never heard the term before, but seems like it has to include Thursday. Muses is when Mardi Gras really gets rocking.
Typical NOLA hate from the OP brings out the morons who don't read. This is a national story with regional implications. Not the other way around.

My Delta bill is a little over $200 every month.

Whoa this is what I give up! It's great for the reasons you said: it cuts out all non-"necessary" alcohol, encourages socialization, and should save money (depending on how social you get).
Agree. Hardest part for me is giving up that end of the work day cocktail or glass of wine on the porch in nice spring weather. May need to start inviting the neighbors over.

Usually I give up alcohol. This year I am toying with giving up drinking alcohol unless I am drinking with someone else. Wife does not really drink, so either I need to get a lot more social or I'll essentially be giving up drinking entirely.
re: Has anyone ever tried FreeTaxUSA?

I switched to them about 4 or 5 years ago as Turbotax started creeping up in price. Very easy to use and cheap. Whole family uses them now.
Some day, I'd like to meet someone who was in this group. I'd have so many questions.
I think were I Hispanic I'd feel pretty inspired.
But I'm not.
But I'm not.

re: What type of grandparents do your children/grandchildren have?
Posted by vistajay on 2/6/26 at 2:22 pm to madamsquirrel
My parents, primarily my Dad since he retired sooner, were always around and babysat our kids whenever asked. They would bring them to and from school and to all kinds of functions. My Dad never said no. In laws paid for more and brought the family on vacations but would rarely sit and moved a state away from us within a year after we moved into their neighborhood within walking distance (then complained that we did not visit enough).
We had a 6 hour layover at Gatwick last year. I hate Gatwick and desperately wanted to get out of the airport, either to London or a nearby town. But after asking this board and crunching the numbers, we decided not to risk it and bought passes to one of the fancy airport lounges. Was money well spent and the most relaxing time I've spent there.
re: LHSAA - Soccer Playoffs

Jesuit is the best team in D1 but they always have trouble with St. Paul's in the playoffs, and St. Paul's always peaks in the playoffs. I'm hoping Jesuit will see BR High in the semis but if it's St. Paul's then it's a toss up.
