Telluride and Ouray
Both places are hard to get to, and they like keeping it that way.
Try to find a flight into Montrose and the drive is like an hour to Ouray and maybe 1.5 hours to Telluride.
Telluride is going to have more hotels, resorts, restaurants, breweries, tours, outfitters, etc, so I would say stay in Telluride and drive over to Ouray when you want to do that.
Telluride is more fun. Don't let the secret out.

Yeah flights into Montrose aren’t bad on United so I might do that instead of losing a day driving on both sides of the trip. I was looking forward to the drive a little but the interstate is shut down more than it’s open I feel like.

From montrose it’s an easy drive, but beware. State troopers like that stretch between montrose and ridgeway. You could also check flying into Durango and driving 550. It’s about a 3 hour drive that way, but it’s a beautiful one.

Fly into Durango. The drive up 550 is amazing

Secret?

I mean... Telluride is by far the most beautiful town in Colorado, and maybe the entire country. It should be overflowing with people and business. They've been able to keep too much growth and sprawl in check.
I know dozens of friends who go to Vail and Breckenridge every summer and ski season. Most of those people have never been to Telluride. If there's a secret left in CO it's the southwest part of the state.

I don’t know if Telluride is so much a secret as it is a PITA to get to.
Although, a shite ton of people go to Moab every year, which is probably only slightly more accessible than Telluride.

People choose other places because it’s easier to get to for sure.

Difficult to get to, I'm sure water rights are a challenge to come by, and not exactly a lot of room to sprawl out. Plus, yes, these mountain towns are experts at dragging shite out for developers.

Name a town in the NW that ain't Steamboat.

We’ll name another town in NW Colorado that is worth the hype.
