We are considering doing a western trip this fall for 2 weeks, as well as 3-4 other road trips this year. Is it unrealistic to buy an RV and then sell it in around a year time frame. Not looking to make a profit or even break even, more so just the convenience of having it available as well as date flexibility. Due to work its hard for me to plan concrete trips sometimes.

Outside of insurance and maintenance, if I just bought say a basic Ford V8 model with under say 50,000 miles and then re sold it with say 10,000 miles added how terrible of an Idea is it? To rent an RV as well as flights we're talking $15,000-20,000 for what I'm considering for a family of 5. So I'd have a lot of money to "play with" here.

Have you compared this to simply driving and renting an AirBnb in the places you are wanting to visit? I know this does not answer your question but curious if you've compared the two. I know thinking an RV would save you on date flexibility but in reality you still have to reserve camping spots in most places, and the people I know who camp with RV's book some places 4+ months out, something to think about.

Rent one from Cruise America. We have been doing this for 6 years and are still ahead, easily.

Yes. Looking at the RV as a means to travel and live out of. Have 3 kids under 7, so checking in and out of places constantly is a major hassle for my wife and she hates that.

Priority is not just saving money, obviously keeping a budget in mind.

Also, I think it would be fun as hell to have a small RV for a year for like a 2 hour road trip weekend. DON"T want one for longer than a year or two. Have storage space at my house FWIW so that's not a problem.

I'm looking to do 2 weeks in November and its $3000 and that doesn't include flights to Denver which is another $2000. That's $5000 right there.

If I was looking to do one trip a year for 5 years you are correct, Cruise America is a better option. I was considering doing 4-5 trips in a 1 year time frame and then selling.

Now, the argument is I won't do those 4-5 trips and that is a risk most certainly. But a counter argument would be maybe I use it more often?

I don't know how much insurance is, $2000/ year? If I throw in Maintenance of $2500 and taxes I'm thinking I could be all in for around $10,000 for a years of use. Plus the hassle of buying and selling. That's where the question of making it worth it? It sounds like a lot but its not really.

I’d rent instead of buying.

Why would you have to fly? Drive the RV whether you purchase or rent it.

Of course you can sell it. But you might not get what you want for it. Image if you were trying to sell it last 6 months.

It makes more sense to fly and rent one out there then drive to denver from the Southeast I think. Not much I care to see between Florida and Denver especially both ways if I'm renting. If I owned I'd drive no problem.

Some of this is a comfort and care thing also. If we owned we could take our time planning and carry more shite. I'm not looking for my dream motorhome by any means. But if you rent you gotta baby it, can't customize, and ultimately not bring some things you may want to because its a rental.

I have no clue how hard it is sell an RV. If I get a good deal on one with say 45,000 miles I can't imagine I would lost THAT much selling a year later with 55,000 even with them losing value horribly.

I just shared with you 12 trips in 6 years and told you that we are way ahead. Sounds like your mind is made up. Good luck.

That makes sense.

But one question I don’t think you have mentioned, have you taken the family on a road trip in an RV before? I’m assuming it went great?

I’m wondering about the practical issue of boosters and car seats for three under 7s in an RV. Where do all of those buckle in?

I’m all ears. You never said anything about 12 trips you said you’ve been doing it for 6 years. I’d be happy to see your math? Again though, it’s not all about the cheapest option.

I’ve rented a cruise america RV before and they are fine but that’s it. No comforts at all and bare bones, it’s not that cheap either. As I said our 2 week trip depending on mileage is between $3000-3600. If you did that 12 times that’s $25,000-40,000 in rental costs. If you bought a lightly used RV in the beginning and ran the math I don’t think you’d be ahead like you think if you had free storage.

Doing multiple trips in one year would cut costs down with less maintenance, less insurance, etc.

I’ve used campers many times and my father in law had some RVs. I’ve never done A RV on a road trip with only my family no. But I have experience road tripping and camping with the family, as well as renting an RV with friends for a football game weekend.

To answer Hungryone, yes the layout and seating certainly comes into play. Only one kid would be in a car seat the other are in boosters which are very easy to sit anywhere with a seat belt.

ETA: what I don’t have experience with is buying and selling used RV’s. I’m sure it’s a hassle. That’s what I was looking for experience from others on? Obviously I don’t expect it to sell immediately or without issues. I do have experience maintaining campers and maintaining vehicles. I know RV tires are expensive and some other maintenance a hassle. But I’m only looking at doing 10,000 miles or less in a year on a vehicle with under 50,000 Miles.

Look at deals they have that include miles and $9 to $39 per day rentals. The hit on depreciation alone will be 40% of the cost of the RV. We fly all over the country to pick them up for usually $120 each on SWA. Your HOA will usually light you up for storing an RV at your home there is $200/mo. Pulled into Pensacola
one morning and they spent over $3k replacing the ac. On a 1 1/2 year old RV. Stuff happens. We started renting different sizes to focus our purchase and after 2 years decided not to buy. I looked last night and we have rented 17 times in 7.5 years and unless I win the lottery, I won't be a buyer

Relocation deals can be as low as $81/trip with free miles
if you are a bit flexiable

Yeah but it sounds like you are retired? I have kids and will be going during peak times most likely and without flexibility. Again I said lightly used so 40% depreciation isn’t happening in one year.

I’m not opposed to renting, I don’t have an HOA and I have free storage as said above.

Not trying to disagree but you are trying to make an argument here that’s apples to oranges.

Additionally, you do understand that Cruise America is making a profit right? They get the RV’s cheap due to bulk orders but they are buying new and selling and still making a profit. RV ownership can be extremely expensive, but doesn’t have to be.

If buying....you will be paying top dollar - it is a dealer market. RV sales are at record levels right now.

If the RV market tanks post covid, you will lose your arse in resale.

Unless you plan to RV full time, lease or rent.

Actually I haven't at all and I'll likely rent. Like I said, you are trying to compare apples to oranges and then blaming me for not listening. You are retired going on trips over 7 years without kids during non peak times, I'm only looking for 9 months to 18 months of ownership with kids during peak times. Its not a fair comparison.

If you have never bought and sold an RV how would you know your savings? That's what I was looking for. I'm not looking for a new RV and everyone assumes campers are expensive but that's not always true. Furthermore, I'm not looking for the cheapest option. I'm looking for the most comfortable option within reason.

I think you are going to have a hard time finding someone here that will be able to give you advice to your unique situation.

It’s very specific and I doubt many people here have intentionally bought and sold an RV within 12 months.

No I know that, absolutely. Its more about just buying and selling an RV/ camper in the first place.

I'm guessing selling an RV is more of a PITA then selling a vehicle and that RV dealerships make more money then a used car dealer would as they do fewer transactions that are bigger PITA's.

I'm not looking for an amazing RV. It would be a temporary use thing no different than a rental. Most people buy an RV like its a second home and want to treat it like that, which causes all sorts of issues. I'm not.

So that's mostly what I was looking for, was just the experience of buying and selling? How much of a pain that truly is?

ETA: Again, I'm seeing 5-8 year old RV's with 12,000, 18,000, 24,000, etc. miles. If I buy reasonable well I can't see a 5 year old RV with 24,000 miles being worth that much more than a 6 year old RV with 36,000 miles. I'm already going to spend $8,000-10,000+ on vacations. Its not like there isn't a good chunk of change being spent one way or the other.

Any advice on best sites or other resources to rent? The mileage charges make renting unwise from what I’ve found so far, it sounds like you’ve got a better handle on how to rent them efficiently.
