These are our exact travel moves. When kids were in diapers, we used the car seats/bags to hold bulky arse diapers and wipes.

We used the car seat wedged on top of the stroller or snap and go, then did gate check in of stroller/car seat… sat the kids in our lap to save money in steady buying another seat until 2

Buy the cheap Cosco carseats. Leave your regular car seats installed in the car. And then just check the cheap carseats at check-in. It's free.
When you get home just keep the cosco carseats as spares.

The Scenera next is used by rich and poor people alike, they're universal, which is why almost nobody makes a true competitor to a lightweight 50 dollar carseat. There is no need/market.

My buddy just left one in St Lucia last weekend. They're practically disposable.

Few thoughts to add to what's already been said here.

Currently we use the cosco car seats as mentioned multiple times(kids are 4 and 2). They are lightweight, cheap, and still meet safety regulations. As said can stuff extra items in with it(diapers etc) that save room on the actual luggage.

We never used the car rental car seats. We thought about using it one time, but they all nearly have policies where they can't guarantee a car seat even if you reserve ahead of time(queue Jerry seinfeld meme). So I didn't want the potential stress of arriving to the airport and not having a car seat and having to deal with that.

I personally wouldnt check yoir expensive ones. Delta destroyed one of our uppababy infant car seats(the fabric was all torn and it was soaked with water etc.). The only saving grace is that I had bought one of the uppababy travel bags meant for the car seat and it comes with "insurance", uppababy replaced it with no issue. So basically unless there's a good reason better to travel with a car seat you are okay with potentially throwing away if damaged.

In my experience, the kids usually want out of the car seat almost the entire flight and are better off held in a parents’s lap. The extra seat often just gets wasted holding the car seat that you have to lug around.
