U.S. airport screenings fell to the lowest level in more than six months as new Covid-19 infections climb and the Biden administration introduces new travel restrictions.

The Transportation Security Administration screened just 468,933 people at U.S. airports on Tuesday, down 71% from a year ago when more than 1.6 million people went through those checkpoints. It was the fewest number of screenings since July 4, TSA said. The CEOs of Delta Air Lines and United Airlines recently warned that the industry faces a difficult start to 2021.

Executives expect it to take several more months before more Covid-19 inoculations fuel a significant rebound in travel demand. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines will report results and their 2021 outlook on Thursday.

I’m looking at booking a flight on American from New Orleans to St John. Right now 2 of us are around $665 round trip excluding baggage. Do you think I can get cheaper if I wait until tomorrow?

I haven't noticed a decline at the airport or on my flights lately... but would love to see that for the next few months.

You mean AA flights to St. Thomas? $330 RT is a little high. I would expect cheaper since it is off season. I think under $300 RT would be my goal. Wouldn't hurt you to wait a week.

Our trip is in March. I just booked it but, I’ve got my 24 hour cancellation if I decide to do something different.

Agree, but there’s also a lot less flights than before. Most of where I have flown this year has reduced the number of directs by 25-50%.

Fly to Vegas tomorrow and what used to be 5 directs a day is down to 3. Flight is currently 85% booked

The cost of airfare later this year and beyond is going to be through the roof. Between then playing catch-up and what gas prices are going to do, it’s going to be insane

It’s not off season in St Thomas. This is their high season

Ah you're right - peak season is Dec to late March. Last time I was there a surf shop dude told me summers were the busiest. Should have known he was high.

Honestly hope airline prices start to rise to push out the abundance or morons I’ve had to deal with in the airport and on flights the last 6 months.

The pandemic has opened air travel up to a group that normally can afford or doesn’t travel.

Just boarded a slight and it was easily one of the most painful experiences I’ve had.

I don’t want to interact with strangers in an airport when we’re not during a pandemic, I couldn’t imagine doing it now.

I have a pair of air buds i bought at $5 and below and I just put them in my ear and walk around and nobody talks to me, if they do, I ignore them and point to my earbud if we accidentally make eye contact

I just flew into Atlanta on a Saturday afternoon and the airport was like a ghost town. It was eerily reminiscent of last April.
