And if you do just want to get there as fast as possible with one stop, push past Dallas and stay in Denton or Wichita Falls. You want to wake up well to the west/north of the metroplex.

Agree with others. Power through Texas as quickly as humanly possible. We drive from Houston to Breckenridge every year. Always do 'day 1' and get to Trinidad CO. It takes us about 12.5 - 13 hours.

The scenery is very bland until you get close to Amarillo and west of the city getting into New Mexico. Someone else mentioned the Capulin Volcano, it seems like a great place to explore but we've never stopped b/c by the time we get to there it is usually late in the afternoon and we are focused on getting the next hour or so to Trinidad.

From Trinidad to Breck on Hwy 9 is an amazing drive coming up from the south of town. The mountain scenery is unreal and never gets old. Royal Gorge is along the way outside of Pueblo CO and is a neat place to stop and spend a handful of hours.

I can't believe everyone is ignoring Palo Duro Canyon.

If you are going through (or stopping in) Amarillo, it's the ONLY thing you need to see in Amarillo. If you budget 3hrs, you can have a great time.

Keep in mind they will close the canyon quickly if bad weather comes in.

I’ll second the palo duro canyon. It’s one of the best state parks in the country in my book and I’ve probably hiked the light house trail a dozen times. Well worth a day if you find yourself in Amarillo. That said, i’d rather spend those 3-4 hours in southwest Colorado if time is limited.

Driven BR to Pagosa 4 times now. There's nothing worth stopping at along the way.

BS - two things that come to mind are:

1. Palo Duro State Park in Canyon, TX. It’s the 2nd largest canyon in the US.
2. Santa Rosa, NM - check out The Blue Hole - are you man enough to take a plunge ?
