Thought this board would appreciate this. Have been in Paris visiting our French “family” since 12/26. I highly recommend it. Paris is very pretty during the holidays, as are all the other towns. Bonne Anee!

What other towns have you visited there?

We went to Normandy and Omaha Beach. The cemetery and visitors center is a must see for anyone interested in history. Very emotional experience.

Also went to Mont Saint-Michele. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and worth the visit. Very cool medieval village on an island (at least at high tide). Worth the visit.

And Cabourg- a seaside town in Normandie. Second home to Marcel Proust. Very quaint, picturesque French beach town.

As long as you don’t mind cool weather with a little rain, I recommend visiting this time of year.

Did you do this as a day trip from Paris? Care to share any details if so?

That's on my list but never want to spend the time getting there.

We did a guided bus tour from Paris to the Normandy beaches years ago. Excellent trip. Left at the crack of dawn and returned late. Saw various points on the beaches, American Cemetery (Saving Private Ryan), and the museum in Caen. It was a full day, but time and money very well spent.

Would love to go back and spend a few days in Normandy, but the bus trip was an efficient use of time if visiting Paris for a stretch and have a day to spare. Same for the bus trip to Giverny to see Monet’s home and garden.

Dude, if you're there in the winter (which you are) go to Bastogne (it's closer from Paris than it is from Brussels.) You need to see and feel it to believe it. Also, since you're into war, spend five hours or more in the French Army Museum in Paris is magnificent.

Bastogne is a day trip, but be aware that there are almost no gas stations in the "pit" that Bastogne is in that are staffed or will let you buy gas with a foreign credit card on non business days.

Verdun is probably more than you bargained for, but there's another great place to hit from Paris.

We are actually staying with our French “family” in a Paris suburb. We went to the Omaha Beach area in one day and then spent the night in their seaside apartment in the region. Next day did some more exploring and returned to Paris. I could have spent more time exploring Omaha Beach area but the rest of the family was ready to move on. Definitely can be more than one day if you want to soak in the experience and take your time to see everything.

It is a trek, but I think worth it, especially if you have been to France before and done the “easy” tourist things. Even though the shops in the city have been converted into tourist shops and restaurants, there are walkways and alleyways that are not like that and you can see what it might have been like to be there when it was a true town. There are also hotels there where you can spend the night. It was a cool experience. Very neat to see it rising out of the sand and water.
