A few years back my father in law (who is a notoriously shitty driver) and I took a golf trip to Ireland. We landed in Shannon and rented a nice little Volvo SUV. We got in our car and hit the road from the airport headed Southwest down to Killarney. About 30 minutes into the trip my father in law absolutely smoked a curb and blew out the tire.
It was pouring down rain, so he called customer service for the car rental rental place. The only person on duty was the guy who actually rented the car to us at the airport, so he shut down his shite, scrambled out to where we were and changed our tire in the rain... in his suit. We then followed him to some hole in the wall mechanic in the middle of no where and he stayed with us until we were all squared away. Best customer service I've ever seen.
Over the next few days, my father in law hit several more curbs and several rock walls along the narrow rural roads we were taking to get to the golf courses we were playing. I eventually got tired of being scared for my life, so I nutted up and told him I was taking over driving. I didn't hit a single thing.
Moral of the story: if you are a competent driver, you'll be fine.

You’ll be fine. Make sure you get an automatic.

A lot of the rental cars used to be stick shifts and that added a whole other wrinkle. I assume that may have changed.
The vast majority of rental fleets are still manual transmissions.
And this guy always pays dearly (usually about twice as much for the same model car) for a rental with an Automatic transmission.
The UK is the same way.
Not going to try to do it, already have enough on my plate with traffic being bass-ackwards.
OP:
The best clue for me in driving is that the driving position is (obviously) on the "wrong" side of the front seat. That is a constant reminder to me that I have to stay on the left.
Once seated there, the left lane driving just kinda comes naturally to me.
Roundabouts and narrow roads with perpendicular stone kerbs are hell on tyres/rims there in rental car fleets.
Rental car insurance (both for collision and vehicle damage) is relatively cheap there, I always purchase it when I go.
Got run off the road by a tractor with a farm cart in Wales and popped an rental A7's tire on the curb, road service came out on a Sunday and changed it for me as part of my coverage.
An Indian (dot) ran into me from behind in Leicester at a turn circle and we exchanged insurance information, no cops are involved unless there's serious bodily injury.
My Insurance took care of that damage with the Car Agency, taking my place to recover the damages from the Indian's carrier.
I love Ireland when it's off season, the only things that are is the short daylight days, the weather(obviously), and that some things are either closed or have greatly diminished hours.
So I guess it kinda sucks.
Not many tourists though.
Have a great time.
