We have a 9 hour flight ahead of us soon. We get on the plane at 5 pm and land at our destination at 8 am their time. We are hoping we get to sleep a lot on the plane

Following this as we have a couple of LONG flight trips for the 1st time this summer.

First is a European trip, which I'm not so worried about. It's basically leave US at night, fly to Zurich and get there in their morning 8 or so hours later, so I figure it's basically just sleep on the plane.

The ones I'm worried about are the ones for our trip "down under" later in the summer. We leave San Francisco at 11:10 their time (which will seem like 1:10 AM my [Louisiana] time) so I figure I will be ready to sleep right after take-off.

Problem is that's a 13+ hour flight, and after checking it, we will pretty much be in the dark the whole time. Even if I can get 8 or so hours of sleep in, I'll still wake up in the dark, with 5 or more hours to go before we arrive in Auckland, NZ at 7:00 AM their time. It will be really screwed up.

The trip back will be even weirder. We will leave Sydney Australia at 7:00 AM their time, which means I will have been up since probably 4:30 AM their time. As we fly northeast over the Pacific, the daylight will pass quickly; we'll hit sunset at about 3:00 PM Sydney time, and then we'll fly through the 'night' and will land in Los Angeles shortly before dawn there. The leg back to MSY will put us home at 1:00 in the afternoon THE SAME DATE WE LEFT at 7:00 AM in Sydney.

Freaky. Any tips?

If you're in Biz, that can work, but you gotta stay strong when you land and stay active.

I don't know if you're flying UA or ANZ, but it's going to be dark. The UA 787 hits max dim on the windows fast out of LAX, and you have no idea what the sun is doing. If you're on a 777, you at least have the option to try to open your window, but in my experience, FAs will shut you the hell down, because one open window will keep half the cabin from sleeping.

Don't overthink it. Light impacts people the most in my view, but if you just stick to, "It's 0900 in Metairie so I'm staying awake" on the way back, you'll force yourself to be tired enough to follow proper protocol.

Kudos to you if you think you're getting 8 hours of sleep on a 13 hour flight. Even in Biz, that's a hard thing for me to believe is possible for most of us. There are some that are gifted with the ability to fall asleep before the door closes, and stay that way, I am not one of them.

On international trips I go straight from the airport to a hotel very close by and stay there for two days. We’re flying 18+ hours straight to and from Singapore. Staying at Newark airport for almost five days coming and going.

Stay active when you land. As soon as you land eat a small meal and walk a good bit. Then nap. But if you go straight to bed it'll throw you off.

I am flying out tomorrow from Atlanta to Bangkok ... via Doha, Qatar. This is my third time on this trek and have never had issues.

The trick is easy ... rest on the planes as much as you can and then when you land at your final destination there are two approaches:

if it's an AM arrival, i try to take an hour or so nap (afternoon arrival i just stay up), then walk and walk and see the sights. Finish up with a nice dinner and cocktail and then bed around 9pm. Wake up the next day at 7am. Rested and ready.
