Looking to go in March during spring break. Daughter gets two weeks so we will go Wed to Wed. Wife was liking the Wailea Beach resort. We have a 10 yr old daughter tagging along. Any other resorts you recommend?

I would recommend splitting up between Grand Wailea and the Ritz Kaplau. Completely different sides of the island with completely different vibes.

My preference has always been to opt for short term rentals (VRBO and Airbnb). I am not looking for much in terms of concierge services and really want/prefer a full kitchen and laundry facilities. One of the things I really loved about those rentals in Hawaii is many times previous renters buy things and leave them in the unit since they can't fly home with them (beach chairs, boogie boards, small coolers, even unopened frozen foods in the freezer) and from what we were able to find, they often provided less crowded beaches and pools and cost less (can usually be found for around $200/night).

For example, Sugar Beach Resort in Kihei. Centrally located on the island, easy commute to the airport / Target, etc.

My recommendation would be to book soon. I was looking in December for travel in February and the place we wanted was full for 2 of the 7 nights I was looking at. I think they may be doing some renovations so that plays into it but I wouldn’t put it off much longer.

I wouldn’t mind an Airbnb but wife likes the big pools, drinks etc. plus they usually have stuff for kids to do.

Yeah, if you go to Hawaii and plan on spending alot of time at your accommodations I guess hotels and resorts may make more sense but personally, it's where we spend our mornings and evenings and that's about it. I don't want to go there just to hang out in a pool all day and do resort activities.

I think it’s just a difference in thoughts. When I’m on vacation, I’d rather have my bed made for me , be able to grab a drink from a bar without driving, and have options on activities for a down day. I’ve transitioned from finding the best value to finding the most convenient. I’ve also transitioned to not having to cram pack every minute with travel. My work days are hectic. Vacation is time to relax (even if that means I don’t see every checklist recommendation). Different strokes and neither is wrong.
