Taking my 14 yr old son to LA for MLB All Star game. 3 night stay. Main question is what area to stay in. Hollywood area so we have other attractions, etc? Or closer to Dodger stadium? I've never been to LA

Unfortunately, Hollywood and any of the areas around dodger stadium are disgusting. I’d recommend Pasadena as there’s plenty to do there and it’s a straight shot to dodger stadium on the 110 fwy. If money is no object, Beverly Hills and the areas immediately surrounding are good.

Stay in Santa Monica, join a gang, shop at Beverly Hills

Stay in Santa Monica
Santa Monica is my favorite area of L.A.
I was also in Venice Beach a few days ago and the homeless encampments are gone so it's back to being the coolest Beach city in Los Angeles as far as people watching and quintessential L.A. Beach vibe.

They probably sent their homeless to Hawaii

A lot of it would depend on your budget and what else you would like to see. Wife and I stayed at the Roosevelt on Hollywood Blvd,(Loews Hotel is also nice) so she and our SIL could do stuff while we went to the LSU game.
From the hotel we able to walk to the Hollywood Bowl, see Hollywood Blvd attractions. We took an Uber to the Rose Bowl, Tar Pits, The Getty, Warner Bros studio. Dodgers weren't in town.

Stay in Hollywood. Near all of the attractions, it is an easy drive to Beverly Hills, Santa Monica etc. Look for something west of Highland.
The area around Dodger Stadium is a dump.

"The area around Dodger Stadium" resident here. Congrats on coming out to the MLB All-Star game. Dodger stadium is a great venue and I usually make it out to a few games a year. The recent additions and renovations in preparation for the ASG have made it an even better experience. Will surely be a packed house so allow for enough time to get to the game.
The areas around the stadium (Echo Park, Silverlake, Chinatown) are not disgusting. They're not clean though. Is it Beverly Hills? Of course not. Everything is old. These areas are half gentrified with hipster artistic tatted-up coffee-drinking yoga types and the other half being OG 2nd/3rd generation Latino and Asian families. There's a reason why it's so expensive to live around here and it ain't because it's a shite hole. It's not for everyone but it's great if you don't expect it to be something that it's not.
Having said that, there's no reason to stay in this area. At all. MAYBE downtown but that place can be sketch as all hell depending on what block you're on.
For the love of God, AVOID Hollywood at all costs! THAT place is a shite hole. Tourist trap hell whole with no redeeming value whatsoever. Thank me later.
Pasadena is a good call for a place to stay. If you were staying longer I'd say the South Bay or Coastal Orange County but you don't want to spend your whole time on the freeway.
Lot's of great things to do in the city. If you have any questions just ask!

He’s 100% spot on, especially about the silverlake gentrification. Stay out of Hollywood.
