Of course, not all kit lenses are equal. The Fuji 18-55 is a very legit lens. Even the less expensive XCs that Roger has are very solid.
I do agree with you on lens rentals, it makes a lot of sense when you need something really wide or something with a lot of reach.
I think sharp high quality zooms are underrated for landscapes, especially in a place like Alaska. I see a lot of people who want to do landscape work going really wide primes in really wide places and getting discouraged because their images are flat. Andy Mumford discusses this a lot (from a Fuji-specific perspective).

Antique or Roger, do y'all have any suggestions to replace the 18-55 kit lens for my Nikon D5600?
I have two lenses now, 27-70mm 2.7, and a 70-200mm 2.7. Either one of these are great for portraits, but I am not a portrait photographer. I still hire a photographer for portraits of my daughters. I use the 70-200 for action (soccer & dance), and the 27-70 for landscapes.
One thing about these lenses, especially the 70-200, it’s quite heavy. I think my camera and 70-200 weigh about 8 lbs. I have a Canon 5D M3. It did get heavy carrying around Rome.
I also have a Nifty 50, but the cheap version. It’s very light because it’s plastic. It works well for landscapes and portraits.
When I went from a cropped sensor to full frame, mirror less cameras were just getting big. The only reason I didn’t go mirror less is because I already had a ton of money tied up in lenses.

Yep, the XF18-55 is not "kit lens" quality, even though it is a kit lens. Hell, the XC is better than any kit lens I have had with previous cameras.
The 18-55 is phenomenal for the price. It was the first Fuji lens I had and it came with my old XT-1.
