Finally figured out a decent image hosting, other than Photobucket. I'll update links soon.

Try IMGUR.... they are very reliable and known for not updating or changing their links.

Scope out the bronze shoe memorial in Budapest... super moving. Watch out for the Palinka because that shite is strong. Also there is a museum about WW2 and the occupancy that is crazy.

I hate we missed the occupancy museum. We did the shoe memorial at night and it's definitely worth seeing.

OP is 100% correct about taxis at the station. That's probably the only time in Europe I've been stranded anywhere (temporarily). We had no forint yet and the ATMs at Keleti were broken. As he said, no Uber. Negotiating with the drivers was interesting, very much old world. You'd say something, they'd huddle, and come back with a collective response. And so it went.

Worked out fine though, love Budapest.

Great reviews! Hit both places last November. Among our most favorite trips!

just got back from Avalon trip -thought food was great and reasonable ( had three michelin meals under $50) liked pest best of all -the promenade along the river was amazing constant stream of people on every kind of wheeled conveyance imaginable - and fast- 12 days of white and red wines and was not impressed with the hungarian reds - sensed no danger and people were friendly to Americans
