Looking a trip this summer. Someone suggested "Moorings.com" website. I have my captains license and pretty sure I can handle the boat while down there.
Anyone have experience w captain or chef on board vs not. I don't think any other couples/family's are coming with us, so the cost is all on me for our family.

We did it last year without hiring a captain or chef and had no major issues. Friend has his captains license and is experienced with offshore boats. We brought a few frozen meals with us, got groceries delivered to the boat before hand, and bought some lobster and fish on anegada island. The one issue we had was not being able to get a mooring ball on jost van dyke. There were boats on anchor, but we weren’t comfortable going to shore on anchor especially after seeing people pulling up heads of coral on their anchors. Will you have anyone to help you tie up to mooring balls? It is an incredible trip!
Edit to add that we also ate either lunch or dinner at all the islands we went to. If you make it to anegada you have to rent the scooters!

If you are a true captain and not a “credit card” capitan like I was then you will do great. Most everything is line of sight. If you can get close enough for your wife and kids to hook a mooring ball then you will be all set.You don’t need a chef or a captain. Every different island you go to has great places to eat and drink. Just dinghy to shore and enjoy.
White Bay Jost Van Dyke is my favorite. Hit Cane Garden Bay on Tortola, Saba Rock on Virgin Gorda.
I never did Anegada but it’s on my list when I go back next time.
It’s an incredible trip.

There isn't much to Anegada other than Cow Wreck beach and some good lobster fishing and snorkeling. It's very flat and not very rocky like the other islands. It's worth taking a day or two there if you are sailing anyway.

Yeah Anegada was cool just to do it. Lobster dinner was nice on the beach. We moored there one night then came back to the main islands.
My dad has always captained our family vacations there.
Its a great time and a very unique trip. The boats have grills on them. We would pack a cooler full of frozen meat. Steaks/Ground beef/Chicken and then check it on the flight as checked luggage and use that for quite a few dinners while sailing.
Havent been in close to a decade. Man i wanna go back.

Have done this several times and love it. If you are at all familiar with handling a boat, you should be fine. The rental companies will ask for a sailing "resume" where you list prior similar experience - they care more about prior experience than any sort of license. If they are concerned about your level of skill, they could mandate a "check-out" sail with one of their staff where they join you for a couple hours or a day to ensure you are capable - at your expense of course.
The Moorings is the biggest company down there and have the most boats. There are other companies that are also great, and may be less expensive - we usually use Virgin Island Yacht Charters. They have different size boats based on how many occupants.
Sailing around the islands is easy and the charts help avoid obstacles and reefs. Sailing to Anegada is more challenging, but Anegada is our favorite island. Renting motorcycles and driving around to the different beaches on Anegada is awesome, and of course the lobster dinners at Potter's are great. This is the least crowded of all the major islands. Make sure to hit Norman Island (with the Willy T), Cooper Island, and Jost van Dyke. A stop at Virgin Gorda (Levrick Bay or Bitter End with a stop by The Baths), Scrub Island, and Cane Garden Bay on Tortola are good additional stops.
