I live in Navarre and it's pretty laid back. Not as pricey or crowded as Destin/South Walton (tho the crowds get worse every year). Gulf Breeze can put you on the bay or sound.

You really need to decide what you want for amenities and activities.... some areas have lots of restaurants and others don't.

Okaloosa Island (Ft Walton) itself isn't too crowded. Just all the traffic on US-98 trying to move through. Note that the Brooks Bridge is going to be replaced over the next 5 yrs or so, so traffic will be a bear.

Appreciate the responses, everyone. A lot to think about - Like I said, we are just in the beginning stages of figuring out where we want to be. Completely unsure, and we have looked north of Miami, too, for the person that asked. I know "30A" / Florida Panhandle is popular on this board, so I wanted to get some initial thoughts since I am pretty unfamiliar.

Look up Britt Landry. She is awesome and is perfect for finding you a location.

You might consider buying on one of the springs further east rather than the beach

Yeah, I live within a mile of the ocean but in an area with mediocre beaches at best. But there is a lot of water for fishing and kayaking (ocean, marsh, rivers, lakes, springs). It's not crowded at all because the tourists and retirement people want beach. The the land was cheap. No nightlife, a few restaurants, shopping is 25 minutes away. But I'd much rather be here than have a beach house.
