re: St. John-Places To Stay?

This time next week we will be in paradise! I’m hoping this week passes pretty quickly. I believe we’ve got everything covered other than submitting our information into the travel portal. We’ll do that on Tuesday. One thing I was wondering about is the car ferry situation from St Thomas to St John. My wife has been telling me it’s taking people 2-3 hours to get to St John due to the amount of tourists in the USVI right now. Have any of you went recently and can you tell me how the car ferry situation is?

Car ferry has always added a shitload of time to those that choose to go that route. That’s why we suggested renting on St. John.

At the time, I was looking at rental cars I couldn’t find anything available on St John. We figured we would just get the Jeep when we got off the plane in St Thomas. We also thought that would work better to save a little money by buying our groceries and booze in St Thomas. I talked to the owner of the property that we’re renting and he told me we should have plenty of time to get to St John before dark. We’re supposed to be landing around 2:30 that afternoon. I guess we’re just going to hope it’s not too busy and we make it before the last ferry leaves.

You should be fine. It's just extra stuff added to an already long day of travel. As we stated earlier in the thread, there is no benefit to buying groceries on St. Thomas other than not giving business to a local business on St. John. Star Market is great.
ETA: Enjoy your trip!

I appreciate all your help. I confirmed our rental car this morning and I asked them about the car ferry situation. They said the reason for the long ferry times is actually because of people who make reservations with a certain company. With several different barge companies operating, the people who made reservations have to wait on that particular barge. I’m just going to hop on the first one available. I appreciate your advice on the grocery situation but, my wife keeps reading stuff online that everything is cheaper on St Thomas. We’re going to play that by ear. One other thing I’m going to have to decide on is what liquor to drink. Lately I’ve been making mixed drinks with coconut rum and it’s actually pretty good. What would be a good rum to pickup down there? I like drinking beer on the beach and am a bud light guy. Go ahead and call me trashy but, that’s what I drink. I also like the occasional IPA craft beer but, can’t drink them all day. Do they have any good IPA’s on St John or St Thomas?

Cruzan Rum is made in the USVI. It’s cheap, it’s plentiful and it has a ton of flavors.
That said, once you have a bushwhacker you’ll love them. If you want non alcohol go to St. John brewery and get a root beer float. They’re fantastic. It’s very close to Morgan’s Mango. St. John brewery also has IPA which also is not my style of beer. I’m a light beer drinker like you.

My wife and I are going to St. John with two other couples in June.
This board seems to know a lot about the loaction. How did we do booking this VRBO. I'm hoping it is a good location, one of the other couples was in love with the house.
Also, we have been looking at doing a day of scuba and a day of fishing. Any suggestions on vendors? Y'all have been very helpful with restaurants.
Any other activities that are must do?

That house looks great. You’ll be away from town so you’ll need a vehicle. You need to reserve those far in advance on the island.
Low Key Watersports is the place to book diving. I’d talk with Rockhoppin Adventures about fishing. If they don’t do it they will point you in the right direction. The really good restaurants are all at or near Cruz Bay.
The beaches are beautiful but aren’t on the side of the island you’re staying on. It’s not a long drive though.
I love St. John and can’t wait to get back. We usually go a couple times a year. Maybe this fall.

we stay in Coral every time we go. Pretty much saddle up to the bar in Skinny Legs most evenings. Enjoy your trip!

I'm also going to St. John in a few months (end of May / beginning of June). This thread has been very useful.
Has anyone ever stayed in the Gifft Hill area? I reserved this LINK We wanted something relatively close to Cruz Bay but with a view. This is our first trip to St. John and I'm a little leery of the mountain roads, so I hope this villa isn't hard to reach.

whats to be worried about? steep, crazy turn roads going up and down hills while driving on the left hand side of the road on an island where rum is cheaper than water and goats, deer, donkeys, chickens and giant lizards roam around.
Posted on 3/3/21 at 12:32 pm to Mr Sausage
Right? I'm down for that everyday.

lsualum98 , that link to the place in Giftt HIll looks great. I actually just texted it to my wife as we are planning our next St John visit. We have driven all over the island many times and driving isn't bad once you get over the initial nervousness.

You and I need to meet there one of these days for a drink and dinner. Maybe even a daytrip over to White Bay and the Willie T.

That does look like a really nice place to stay. We submitted our travel documents via the travel portal early yesterday morning. It says we should here something within 48 hours. For those of you that have been recently, how long did it take you to receive your travel clearance?

Yep. Nice area and nice home you've selected.

You got both.

You'll be fine. Just relax, don't speed and pay attention.

so I hope this villa isn't hard to reach.
It's not. Easy drive from Cruz Bay on Centerline Road, which is the main east-west road on the island.
Posted on 3/3/21 at 8:31 pm to DallasTiger
Yep. There are really only a couple of roads on the island.

I had to email the travel portal this morning but, my wife and I both received our travel clearance about 30 minutes after I emailed them. Not sure if it was just coincidence or not but, it’s worth a shot if you don’t receive a response within 48 hours of submitting your documentation.

We finally made it here. Got to the house right before dark. Driving in St Thomas and St John is definitely an experience. We’re in Peter Bay and are picking up cell towers from Jody Van Dyke. WiFi isn’t that great either. Probably going to chill out tomorrow and stay around Peter Bay and Little Cinammon before we go to Morgan’s Mango for dinner tomorrow night. we got to the car ferry at around 5:00 and one was pulling off but another one was like 30 minutes behind it so we made pretty good time. I’ll try to keep you guys updated some.

Enjoy. Disconnect and enjoy. We can hear about it when you return. Have a bushwhacker for me.
