Left the ranch today and headed for an airbnb outside dripping springs.
Nice drive on some narrow twisting back roads.
Pulled in the gate of this place and drove back about a quarter mile.
This place was built and owned by a U Texas architecture professor. It's nice and the property is very nice but the design of the structure is just a boring metal building.
Inside is nice.
Picked up some enchiladas at Verdes Mexican just a couple miles away.

We’re heading to Kerrville on Wednesday. Picking up 2 dozen enchiladas from one of our favorites: Pat’s Place in New Braunfels. Enjoying your pictures.

dripping springs
So many low water crossings in the area. I remember going to friends’ houses and getting “rained in” when a storm would pop up. You’d sometimes have to just stay the night.
I used to go back pretty regularly, but I haven’t been back since my last high school reunion.

Today we had reservations for Hamilton Pool which is a very popular spring fed swimming hole run by Travis County (Austin) parks. We have tried to get reservations several trips before but it is a very tough ticket to get as it is small and they limit daily visitors.
We hiked down to the swimming hole.
Pretty nice spot.
Unfortunately, bacteria levels were too high in the water to swim, which happens a lot in austin. We hung out for about 30 minutes then headed back to the truck. On the drive to Hamilton Pool we saw a sign for Reimer Ranch preserve which we didn't know anything about and there was no cell service out there but decided to check it out. It's another Travis County park and has mountain bike trails, rock climbing, hiking and a beach on the Perdenales River.

Hey Dlauw,
What year did you graduate? A really good friend graduated in 84. They lost their home when Blanco flooded.

‘91. Your friend would have graduated from Hays. WHS wasn’t built until ‘87. We were the first class to attend all four years. I had some friends lose houses during the floods too. Spent many summer days at that river. The rope swing near the 7A ranch was almost always a stop ‘til old man Who owned it started running people off. We’d still go though.
It’s funny how things have grown there. Tickets for Hamilton Pool, Blue Hole and Jacob’s Well? That’s just crazy to me. Back in the day, I guess they just weren’t well known.
I’ve jumped off the waterfall at Hamilton many times and a few of the other spots around the rim as well. Once, I saw a chick who was so scared to jump that when she finally did, she forgot to let go of the “walkout chain” and swung herself into the the rock face and fell. She landed on a her back when she hit the water. She was pretty cut up on the front side and the backside was cherry red.
ETA: OP, thanks for the photos. They bring back a lot of good memories.

Yea, Hamilton Pool suddenly became popular seems like 10 years ago. I think Texas Monthly listed it as a best swimming hole and then boom.

It was a trickle. Talking to people that live out here say creeks that used to have water in them years ago don't now.

Didn't see anyone fishing there. I did at a park in Comfort, probably 100 or so people.

Left dripping springs and headed to our last stop near Lake Travis. Balcones Canyon Wildlife Preserve is just north of Lake Travis and the Golden Cheek Warblers have started returning from the winter in Mexico. This area of the hill country is the only place they exist in the USA. We got to our place which is pretty remote with no cell service. It's a container house in a compound with a house, trailer, horse arena and some goats.

My God, it used to be a complete shitshow when open to the public. I'm glad they put the limits in place to keep the natural beauty.

I looked up photos today via google. It’s crazy what geology, erosion, water does (in thirty years (approx)). The water fall used to be 15-20’ in front of that rock that it’s pouring on. That was where we sat when watching people jump.

Very nice, Zapp.
Looks like you're really enjoying yourself.
I'll be driving through Comfort/Kerrville on my way to Big Bend soon.

Beautiful weather this weekend. Sitting in downtown Kerrville right now.

Nice! It was pretty humid before the front blew through Tuesday nighr but now it's great except for the high winds that finally slacked off this afternoon.

We headed to the Balcones National Wildlife Preserve today in search of the Golden cheeked warbler. It's a nice drive to the Warbler trail head with some really steep, twisty roads
We decided to hike all the trails since we didn't have anything else to do. Unfortunately, it was pretty windy which tends to keep birds in their nests.
Pretty nice trails through old growth ashe juniper trees.
Views to Lake Travis
We hadn't seen any birds because of the wind when we got to a protected side of a Ridge. We heard some birds so stayed in that spot for about 10 minutes when we saw a Black and White Warbler which was cool. We watched it for a minute when boom, a golden cheek landed just 30 feet in front of us. It flitted around for about 5 minutes while we nerded out watching. It is in this Pic somewhere.
Here is what they look like... Not my Pic.
Bird Nurd
We hiked for another hour and a half and didn't see another one. We did see some Black crested tit mouse which a very common and some cedar waxwings which are common too.
We ended the day at a brew pub in Liberty Hill to celebrate our sighting and the end of our trip. Back to Big D tomorrow.

Nice. Drew a whitetail hunt there years ago. That warbler habitat is tough to hunt deer in. My kids swam in the creek today after kayaking and paddle boarding. The wind is dying and tomorrow through Sunday should be awesome. Comfort Pizza reservation tomorrow thanks to your earlier post. Bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed quail, blackbuck poppers, and whatever cool stuff I can find at the meat markets tomorrow.
