If you are going to pick a Texas city that’s most like New Orleans - why not San Antonio?
They are about the same age and both have similar psyche - both along a river with a busy downtown area. They are both very culture forward - even though different cultures.
Plus ive known people murdered in both.

When my kids were in Catholic school, we did not take vacations, we did not eat out, kids did not have many extra curricular activities - we made a lot of sacrifices- just as my parents did.

My oldest has been stranded a few times because flights to BR were cancelled - luckily she was able to fly into NOLA (although this only happened with United)
My older boys were going to fly to meet us on vacation, but the flight out of BR was cancelled.
