Circulator has several routes along the most popular corridors. Union Station to Georgetown; Rosslyn to Dupont via Georgetown; National Mall; Woodley Park (Zoo) and more. The routes overlap to make transferring a breeze.

1. Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum is worth the trip out to Dulles, however you get out there.
2. Mount Vernon - awesome. Make sure you have lunch or dinner while you are there, the food is great and the gift shop has some really cool, unique items.
3. George Washington Mason Monument. Very cool museum inside and you can go all the way to the observation deck. It is right off the Blue line metro.
4. If you have a day and a rental car, go west and hike the Shenandoah National Park (~75 miles), stunning mountain views that you don't get in Louisiana. Even just riding the skyline drive is worth it.
5. The mall, museums, white house, Washington monument. All great but either go early or later in the day to beat the massive crowds.
6. The NRA museum is also incredible, if you are into firearm history and the outdoors. It is in Fairfax.
7. National Harbor is cool for an evening, lots of food, shops, ferris wheel, mock-up of Air Force 1.
Food was always just okay to me in D.C. (I graduated last year from GWU post-grad law program). They have anything you want, but nothing that is really amazing (my opinion).
GCDC - a gourmet grilled cheese bar is just a block or two up from the white house. It is a great place to duck in and get a good lunch and try some local beer. There is also a Founding Farmers another block up, right across the street from the GWU law school. Good food, but you MUST make reservations.

If you like roller coasters, make sure you do the jet simulator. It cost something like $10, but it is worth it! Just make sure that you have the controls. I had my brother crying like a little girl.

Before you look to stay in Alexandria (or even go out there), you may want to consider --

There is a ferry to Alexandria and to National Harbor from the baseball park. There are many restaurants at both of those.
Just FYI, in case that is the Residence Inn near the Nationals ball park.

The Sunset Parade at the Iwo Jima Memorial is a MUST!
You get to see the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps perform as well as the Marine Silent Drill Platoon - absolutely incredible performance!!
Tuesdays, beginning June 11. Starts precisely at 7, but you need to be there at least an hour before to get good seating.

Be aware, the Yellow and Blue metro lines south of National Airport will be shut down all summer for repair/construction. Total cluster for anyone staying in Old Town Alexandria or points south.

Great Falls Park is really nice
For sure the Air & Space museum annex I've been to both I like the annex the best (The original does have the original starship Enterprise though)
Sunrise at the Lincoln memorial is beautiful looking down the mall, plus a lot less people at that hour.
Any of the Smithsonian's you walk into are amazing.
I've heard the National zoo is nice, but we didn't go when we were there.
If you know anyone in the FBI you could get a tour of the FBI museum, it is not open to the public.

I'm going to DC in a few days and will be there for a week. Does anyone have any suggestions for possible places to stay that are reasonably priced ($100 or less) and that won't require me to wear kevlar?

The good thing about DC is that everything is so compacted and close together so everything is within walking distance. And if you decide to use Uber it won’t be much since everything is right there.
If you go to Arlington you want to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Very overwhelming but amazing experience.

Inn of Arlington is $85. Lee Hwy is a good area in Arlington, but you'll need to take a bus to the metro.
In Rosslyn, Holiday Inn is a little over $100. Much better location, only a block from metro... and Circulator stop for the Rosslyn - Georgetown - Dupont route.

Crawdaddy, your hotel isn't far from the new Wharf area. I'd recommend checking it out. Navy Yards also isn't far; however, use caution at night if walking in the area beyond the centers of activity.
You are staying in a great location for daytime sightseeing. At night, it will be dead because it is mostly federal offices.
