You're missing a key factor in your analysis.
That is - what was the program doing before the new coach took it over.
Mizzou was terrible for 20 years before Pinkel. So 2 bad years at the start isn't so bad.
Arkansas was pretty good recently and still has a roster full of nice talent.. yet they're just awful.

No, but it is telling. There was a lot of trash thrown between WVU and MU fans during the selection process. One team is in the SECCG while the other lost to kansas. And head to head the one in the SECCG just manhandled the other in basketball.
There were incredibly obvious reasons why Mizzou was the stronger choice, which is why the smart people at the SEC chose Mizzou.

This thread isn't about UNC or VT. There was a two man race for the final spot after Texas AM was invited. It was between MU and WVU.

The question in the OP is more than fair.
WVU lost to kansas in football, and just got beat handedly in basketball by Mizzou.
Not long ago many thought WVU was the better choice than Mizzou.
