Audio Delay from TV to Ceiling
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 6/14/19 at 10:59 pm
Had A/V company install a bunch of stuff during my build. I finally got around to do some testing today and noticed there is a audio delay from the tv (samsung frame) to the ceiling speakers. All of the wires run about 25ft to the media closet and up to the speakers. They used one of the cat6 wires as an audio balun to the receiver. Before I call them up, is there a quick fix or should I expect the worse? I would like to have football games with audio from the speakers.

Cool man, because that isn't a number that I haven't called to get answers. LOL. Thanks for responding.
Irrigation Meter, System, and Backflow Question
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 5/15/19 at 8:06 am
Building a house in Jefferson Parish (Kenner). I got a 2nd water meter for irrigation and future pool. Does JP/Kenner require a backflow on the irrigation meter if it's not tapped into the main line? I'm trying to figure out why I would need a backflow installed on the main line if the irrigation system is going to be installed on the 2nd meter? Help.
Congrats on the 2nd baby. Our two girls are 19 months apart and the youngest is 6 months. So I know what you're about to go through...
As far as adjustments. Cost of daycare, diapers & wipes, etc...luckily I had another girl so we didn't have to buy a lot more in clothes.
Good luck!

Make sure you're looking over the fine details. One of the things that I have went through so far is the small details. Like make the entryway casing match the top of my window casing. It wasn't until the house was framed and sheet rocked until we noticed we wanted it to be even. I had to pay for the framers to make a trip...Another example, on the plans, gas lanterns on the front door and electrical ones over the garage. I'm glad my contractor did the bid for all gas lanterns otherwise, it would have been an additional cost.

Boot, new home construction with bermuda. I have an irrigation system as well. What do I need to do to make sure my grass doesn't die in the first month (except watering)

Northshore Parade of homes is coming up in May and NOLA is first two weeks of June. Plenty of homes for ideas. Do you have plans and a builder?

We're going a long power strip underneath the kitchen cabinets instead of having outlets in the back-splash. Run additional cat5/6 wires from the de-mark location just in case. Whole house lighting, smart switches, motion sensors (garage, laundry, pantry). Get a 2nd water meter for irrigation.

Paver Company in NOLA
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 3/21/19 at 8:20 am
Looking for a good paver company to do my driveway/walkway. What are some reputable companies in the NOLA area. Thanks.
If you have a budget, I would find a developer/builder that will work within your budget. If you're buying a lot and finding a custom builder, then you'll be looking at $150/sq foot. One thing I will share with my build is make sure your architect or draftsmen is precise with your design. Nothing worse than wanting to add recessed lighting and seeing the up charge.
What's the purpose of the land? The land cost? 15% of 100K is a lot different than 15% of 500K.
3900 under beam with 3100 living
I can see this for my pantry since the door is going to be closed all the time but what about doors that I will keep open (most of the time). What motion sensor to you recommend? Lutron has one but the timer on those are 1 minute after you leave the room? I feel that is a longer than I would like but I would like to hear others.
re: Lutron Caseta vs Lutron RA2
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 3/19/19 at 8:26 am to Teddy Ruxpin
Cool. I want to install the caseta in high traffic areas (living/kitchen, foyer, etc.), however I'm being told that I should go with RA2 Select and the caseta isn't a great option. I don't know if it's worth double the price to move towards the RA2 Select. Thoughts?
Lutron Caseta vs Lutron RA2
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 3/18/19 at 1:55 pm
Looking for the pros & cons with these two. I do know the caseta has a limit of 50 devices vs 100 for RA. My question is what is considered a device? Is 3 light fixtures on one light switch considered 3 devices? I'm figuring around 30 recessed lights hooked up to about 6 3-way switches.
It's underground. However, I think one of the issue with not getting it yet is due to the guy who is selling the lots. I get a sense he doesn't want them to dig in the area. I could be wrong but it wouldn't surprise me.
How to get fiber internet into the neighborhood
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 3/15/19 at 10:24 am
How does one get AT&T to run new fiber to the neighborhood? The subdivision a mile down the street has it, so I know there running lines in the area but what makes AT&T finally decide to add fiber lines to a subdivision? Is there a number to call?
If that is the case, then he would have been fired for those comments...he is not, so what does that tell you.
My boss would have called me into his office when news released back in October, not 5 months later...Don't tell me Alleva and WW haven't talked about it then.

Question on wifi to outdoor exterior of home
Posted by SLIMNOLA on 2/26/19 at 10:22 am
I bought Lifx bulbs for my house that being constructed. The exterior of my house is stucco and was told about possible wifi issues with the mesh metal in the stucco that could affect my wifi signals to the bulb. I'm also installing a Nest Hello doorbell.
Does anyone have the experience with these bulbs and have a stucco house? If so, what's your experience (bulb and doorbell). Also, for those who uses Philip's Hue and a stucco house.
Trying to determine what course of action I should do.

I'm in the same price range per sq as you; building with the same materials except I was able to get engineered quartz throughout the house. We did splurge on our kitchen appliance however couldn't afford the sub-zero/wolf brand...

Not with certainty but I would assume the hurricanes last year in the panhandle and two years ago in Houston may have a hand in the prices of lumber going up.
While I agree that tariffs isn't the a big part in the rise of construction cost, it plays a part and I can tell you that had I not paid my vendors who are supplying my kitchen/outdoor appliances and light/plumbing fixture late last year, I would have seen an 8-15% increase across the board. That may not seem a lot but take that % to an allowance of $50K for those items.

The cost of building a house will continue to rise. That is just inflation. Tariffs does have an impact but it's minimal. My question to you is, how custom do you want your house to be? Two different people can build the exact same house but one can be $100k more in custom upgrades.
Some of the other items that can drive your cost up. Do you need pilings, are you doing tall ceilings, etc.
I'm 50% into a house build and the little items adds up...
