Southern Pines/Pinehurst NC. Not a large metropolitan area but the store has certainly found its niche here.

I agree. Our local Ace is over 72,000 square feet and has everything! Meat like Wagyu, alligator, kangaroo..even has a wine and beer bar. My granddaughters can’t wait to go there when they come visit. Cool place.

Southern Pines here - I wasn't aware there were so many Tigers in NC!

I graduated with her and these threads always bring up fond memories of my time with Connie. She had a way of making me and others better just by her presence and friendship. Getting the call early that morning still seems surreal after all these years. It’s heart warming to see the kind words about her on here. She was a special person who deserves to be remembered.

I've had a few. They aren't too bad and you can go about your business as soon as it is over. No restrictions on activity.

I own an Ace Handyman franchise and have several retired guys that work for me. They work the days they want and only do the jobs they enjoy. It’s worked out really well for me and them.

Interesting you should mention "liquid biopsy" blood tests that detect circulating tumor DNA, ctDNA.I had surgery in November to remove my bladder and various other innards due to bladder cancer and have just enrolled in a clinical trial that will use ctDNA testing to direct further treatment. Waiting on initial tests results that will determine which arm of the study I will be randomized into - immunotherapy, enhanced immunotherapy or possibly no treatment. It is all fascinating, more so if it was happening to someone else!
re: Advice for Attending the U.S. Open? First Time at a PGA Event

Grandstand on the tee box of hole 6 is one place. Depending on where you sit in the grandstand, you have a view of tee box 6 and 4 and a view of the 3rd and 5th greens. I try and end up in the grandstands at the 16th green on the weekend but need to get there fairly early in the day. The hole location on Sunday makes the long iron approach shots pretty brutal. From what i remember facing the grandstand, seats at the tops left can see the entire par 3 17th and the tee of 18. It makes it easier to follow the last group in along with everyone else on the course!

From Charlotte Douglas I would probably take 74 bypass and 74 toward Rockingham and follow signs to first parking. Previous Open's had very short wait times/plenty of shuttles and I did not hear of any lots that had longer wait times. I have seen tons of busses coming in over the past few days.

US Open Info - Local Paper
This is a little busy with ads but has a lot of good information on the US Open from a local perspective.
Not sure where ya'll are staying or how long you will be in town but will do my best to make recommendations if you have questions on dining etc.

Mid Pines and Pine Needles are both top tier, traditional Donald Ross courses. A few years back, the owners of Mid Pines/Pine Needles bought another Ross gem, Southern Pines Country Club. They completely restored the course and the reviews have been great. Either of those 3 would be great for a late afternoon round and provide quite a contrast with Tobacco Road!

I grew up in La and moved to Southern Pines 30 years ago after graduating from LSU. I have been here for the previous 3 US Opens and will make sure to pass along any information that might help make your trip a good one! First, Pinehurst Resort and the USGA know how to handle the logistics. The USGA recently built a new facility on the grounds of Pinehurst Resort and moved most of their headquarters and testing facility here.
Details on USGA Move
They are heavily vested in making the event run smoothly. When the event was held here in 1999 it was the most southern and most rural site to that point. I was skeptical about how they could pull it off but it went perfectly as did the ones in 2005 and 2014. They have satellite parking set up from each direction of travel. They are several miles out but there were plenty of shuttles and I can't recall much of a wait getting in or leaving. Having said that, the area has exploded since the last open, more hotels and regular everyday traffic.
I will make sure to update this thread with anything I think might be useful. Hesitant right now to pass along my recommendations on restaurants, hang outs, breweries etc until I make sure my everyday favorites are going to available that week. Once confirmed, I will send a list.
This is a great area and I hope ya'll enjoy the time! I'll do my best to answer any questions

I have not used their services but have worked very closely with them on local veteran related charity functions. You can tell a lot about a company living in the same town. They have had very rapid growth, have an excellent reputation in the community and seem to be all around champions for veterans causes.

You have chosen well, my friend. What an awesome mix of course designs and personalities. The very best of the area and they all have their own vibe. Honestly, it’s the exact courses I would recommend.
Tough choice between Mid Pines and Pine Needle. I think I’d choose Pine Needles. It’s a classic. It’ll be quite a contrast from your morning at Tobacco Road.
Keep trying to play the cradle in the afternoon. Btw, I see folks playing there barefooted with a drink in hand often. As an aside, I played behind the guys from Barstool sports the last time I was there. Great addition to the Pinehurst offerings.
Let me know if you have specific questions about restaurants etc. I know you’re making quite a financial investment and would love to know your impressions of the trip.
Hit em straight!

Those are the top 5 courses in the area in my opinion. They are also 5 big boy golf courses that can punch you in the mouth if you aren't on top of your game as well though.
If you have some high handicappers in your group you may also want to consider throwing one of the shorter courses into the mix. PH #1 and #3 are good options for that. Both old Donald Ross designs but are much shorter and easier to play. Good for afternoon rounds after getting ejected by #2 if you are playing 36 hole days.
I’ve lived in Pinehurst for over 25 years. You have done a great job explaining the courses. It’s obvious that you have a feel for the area.
I’d be happy to help with restaurant recommendations or any other local insights.

The world never needed to be shut down. The hospitals here in NC were I live are not even busy.
Just curious, where are you in NC?

I grew up in Southern Pines, and my parents are still there. Golf is definitely the draw, but Southern Pines/Pinehurst is a cool little area if you like the small town feel. Lots of parks, trails, and festivals in the downtown areas. 4 distinct seasons, with just enough snow here and there that made it enjoyable but melted before it got annoying. Loved growing up there. I also worked/flew out of SOP for the first 5 years or so of my career. No commercial service, but a capable airport that stays pretty busy during the golfing months. Happy to answer any questions about the area.
I am one of the parents he mentioned. I am a native Louisianan and moved to Southern Pines/Pinehurst 25 years ago. Like Furbs316, I am available to answer any questions.
