Q: I purchased a Patternmaster several years ago for goose and turkey hunting, I have recently purchased some Hevi-Shot and they recommend the choke diameter be .0675 +. 005 can you tell me what size Patternmasters ID is and if you have heard how the Hevi-Shot performs with your Chokes? A: Patternmaster Classic and Code Black tubes are not a constriction tube so the ammunition recommendations do not apply. Patternmaster chokes have been tested and works extremely well with Hevi-Shot.

This is directly from the Patternmaster FAQ page. Looks like you are good to shoot hevi-shot
It is worth the extra $0.08 a shell to go ahead and buy the hevi metals. I have shot them for the past 4 years and can say without a doubt the hype about them is real.

I've had so many more one shot kills and can clean up other peoples birds that are shooting a lesser shell.
Now you're going to have to burn your wheeler

10-4. I live down round Keithville but I hunt up north near Plain Dealing; just trying to get some idea of where they were running

what parish you in baw?
Go get a tree walker and never look back. You can climb a telephone pole covered with crisco with one and never even think about slipping.
What are they selling this stuff for per bag?
You can bring your own stand if you are more comfortable using it than the climbers on the island. They are mostly summits and a few ol man.

They will let you shoot does as long as it is in the woods and not on the food plots. If you want to kill a doe they will be more than happy to make that happen.

Jimmy is always happy to bust open the red wine after a hunt. You will not find a nicer set up as far as facilities go. The stands are top notch and the sleeping arrangements are nicer than most 4 star hotels.

Try to get spike, BL, or Will as a guide

re: Age these deer

Deer in the first pictures seems to be the most mature looking but could just be the angle of the picture. His tines appear to carry more mass and his face and nose are not a sharp as a younger deer.

His neck line runs straight into his brisket which is a good sign of mature age.

He looks like a solid 4-5 year old but the rest need a couple years if you can give it to them.

Grandstaff said the deer was likely 3 1/2 years old.

Could've used another couple years

Check out these guys. Great customer service and they make a very nice fitting and quality seat cover.

I had a set of marathons on my truck for about 6 years and decided to upgrade to these. Really like having the rear seat bow hanger and the front seat gun pocket.

This x1000

The tops of the mucks hold in all that heat and you will be walking with wet towels for socks
It may be your arrows. Having correct spine weight and a quality straight arrows made a big difference for me starting out.

Gold Tip

FWIW I went from a gold tip pro hunter to a maxima red and saw a dramatic improvement in accuracy especially with broadheads.

Did you buy a cough silencer, a mirror blind and a scent lok suit, too baw?

You missed the grand daddy of them all...they're practically giving them away at cabelas, only $499.99.

Toyo Open Country R/T. More quiet than the M/T but more aggressive than the A/T. I've put about 30k on mine and they are wearing great. Rotate every 6k and run at 45 psi.

Should easily get another 30k out of them.

Home Depot sells untreated 4x4 posts both in cedar and pine. Built a king sized bed about two years ago out of some pine ones and they look just fine.
Giles is 9600 acres and is connected to Rifle Point HC (approx. 3200 acres) to the north by a roadway across the Old River Chute.

The chute in some places is less than 50-100 yards wide and deer can easily swim it if necessary.

From talking to guides, after the big flood in 2011, they have pictures of bucks near the middle of the island both before and after the flood in nearly the same place. Once they leave, they find their way back due to the incredible amount of food and the lack of pressure.
I can say without a doubt if you're willing to spend the money Giles is the place to go. No guaranteed kills like a high fence outfit but they have some incredible opportunities. I've been 3 years in early January and killed 3 bucks. It's nothing to see 70-100 in the food plots late season.
I've seen so far in multiple other threads that people were wanting single place to share and compare the bucks they are chasing this year.

I'll kick it off with a couple at my place this year.

Fimco UTV Sprayer

Just bought the 65 gallon boomless version for my Ranger. Works great and I can spray all 6 acres worth of food plots in 1 trip. Definitely worth the money and well made.

I killed my first deer with my grandpa actually filming it. Nothing will beat those memories.
If you are wanting to manage for age, you need to put the buck on the left in the 4th picture as the top of the list. He shows all the typical signs of a mature deer. All of the other deer are no older than 3 1/2 with most being 2 1/2.

If there is any deer in that group that I would no doubt let walk it is the last 8 point, he is only a 2 1/2 year old deer and has the frame and tine length to be a really special 8 point in a few years. Good luck.

Really good read here discussing this topic.

quote:

Summary of Results There are 3 equally important factors that control antler development in white-tailed deer: nutrition, genetics, and age. Antler development is genetically based, environmentally influenced, and reaches its peak at maturity. The key to quality deer management is to remove those bucks which have the least desirable antler characteristics at an early age. Kerr WMA studies show that yearling antlers predict a buck's antler quality at maturity. Kerr genetic studies indicate bucks with the best antlers will produce more progeny with exceptional antlers than will poorer bucks. The does influence antler production as well. Harvest of older does is important to insure younger does are products of better bucks. Habitat should be managed so that deer can achieve their greatest antler potential. There are no methods to "jump-start" a quality deer program.

He'll break 150 easy in his gross with the stickers, mass, and beams. I get 156" when I add it up.
Between 125" and 130". Probably 3 1/2 looking at body and neck. Let him walk in two years he'll be pushing 150+.

Aim further back on a deer than what you do with a rifle if you get a chance to shoot one

This could not be further from the truth. You want to hold your pin on the lower third of the body directly above the back side of the front leg.

My hand-me-down was a 6mm Remington from my grandfather that was used as a gun for running dogs on horseback back in the good ole days.

My first rifle was a 260 Remington Model 7. One of the best calibers for deer I have ever used. Still pick up that rifle when my wife isn't hunting over my 270 WSM.

First picture is all three bucks together.
Second picture is the 8 point in the back of the first picture.
Third picture is the other two bucks from group picture 1.
