Starlink deal to jump on now! Deep dive don't read if you have attention deficit disorder.
Posted by Rowdy Mcflowdy on 2/21/26 at 8:49 pm
So I'd been pondering dropping Cox for a good while now but no good alternatives were available. I'd tried tmobile home internet which was very cheap because I'm with tmobile for phone service. It was fantastic 80 percent of the time BUT right around 6pm to about 8pm speeds slowed down every day during peak usage. So that was out. I wanted Starlink but but kept checking estimated speeds and they were somewhat underwhelming. Its apparently fast in rural areas but in more densely populated areas it could slow down a lot during peak usage times.
Well I follow SpaceX very closely and have watched them launching more satellites weekly to improve the network. So I knew it was a matter of time before it got really good.
Then I recently did some research for a client that wanted Starlink added to his luxury vehicle. Then saw they had a new deal.
NO upfront equipment costs. NO installation costs.
That was my biggest problem with trying Starlink. I didn't want to spend 300 for equipment and 300 for installation then find out it wasn't serviceable.
So I ordered installation. To my surprise it also included a "router mini" to use as a mesh extender, wired or wireless. It looks like a tiny Starlink antenna about the size of your hand.
When you order the service shortly thereafter, 24 hours they will call you to coordinate installation. I asked details about where it would be installed because I had specific needs because of my central area where my current equipment is and is hard wired, then the rest of the house is wireless. They said if it was going to require fishing cables there would be an upcharge. I was fine with that as long as things are done right and to my liking.
Equipment was shipped ahead of time to my house. Installation day came and the installer called me a couple of hours before my 1pm scheduled time and asked if I would be ok if we bumped it up to noon because things were going smoothly for him and he was way ahead of schedule. Of course!
Installation day was rough, more so for the installer not so much for me because it was brutally cold and windy that day Baton Rouge. I even tried to reschedule the installation for later in the week out of concern for the installer having to be on the roof in that ugly weather. The lady assured me it would be fine because my installer recently moved here from Colorado and our cold was not a big deal for him.
Ok so installation went well. The antenna didn't get installed where I Ideally wanted which was on the very top of my 2 story house. He installed it on the roof of my back patio. He assured me it would be fine as it could see the northern sky perfectly.
He didn't install the mini mesh router because he said if he did it would be an automatic upcharge but he showed me how to do it and it was super easy if your are doing wireless which I planned to anyway.
After the installer left I added the mini router at my equipment room so I could plug in my hard wired equipment like surveillance camera hub, and other hub type devices that run my smart home equipment. This happened to be on the opposite end of the house from where the main router was installed.
Still great connection. No buffering. I did a lot of speed tests during the week and identified several areas where signal wasn't as excellent as near the main router or the mini mesh router. So I went on the Starlink site and ordered another mini mesh router. They are ONLY 40 dollars each. When I checked out the charge was Zero dollars so I got the second mini for free. So I ordered a 3rd, that one they did charge me for. So I got 3 mesh minis in my house and so far going on 2 weeks its been fantastic. Absolutely zero regrets. No buffering!
Speeds are not officially as good as Cox cable most of the time. With Cox I was on a 500gb plan which only gave speeds of 300 to 400. I have a couple of their pod mesh extenders. And those things are not very good. They are hard to pair to the system and whenever there is a system reboot like after a power outage or a Cox outage you have to go and restart each pod individually. What's really a problem is that you don't realize is that they are offline until your investigating why your area covered by a pod keeps buffering.
Id kept Cox active incase it turned out I had to keep Cox. But Friday I finally did it. I disconnected the Cox modem and drove it to Cox on Millerville. Easy peasy. I expected a retention attempt but no, they were happy to take the equipment back and terminate my account. They didn't even look at the equipment. There could have been a brick in the bag because they never checked anything. (If you have Cox stock sell!!)
So after all this I'll say my only concerns are that we had a storm co.e through last week or early this week, i forget when it rained really hard for maybe 20 minutes. Starlink lost signal for maybe 5 minutes.
It was a short storm so not a lot of long term data there but my internet searching says that the antenna adjusts in such situations and service is restored quickly. Im a little concerned about performance during a hurricane which happens in Baton Rouge every now and then but if things go south I can always switch to my Hotspot on my phone which has never dropped even during the 2016 flood thanks to tmobile which I've been with for 15 years.
So I say all that to say if your considering changing providers go with Starlink.

re: We are ALL Miami fans tonight.........right?

I guess I'm in the minority but I am rooting for Ole Miss to win it all. I know its an inconvenience for LSU but I'd just love for the team that Kiffin built and is running his offense win it all and hear all the Ole Miss fans just try to explain that Kiffin is not the one they should be thanking for it. And as others have said I want to see Miami have their asses handed to them by an SEC team.

You cannot be this retarded, well actually I guess you are.

I get exactly why he answered the way he did. The truth is that being at LSU gives you a chance to recruit better recruits.
So if you are a current Ole Miss player that would make you feel like sloppy seconds. He's trying to not diss his players at Ole Miss. I get that and have no problem with that. The people that are important understand that.

This board could handle that and WILL handle that because that is the inevitable course. Address them as "Captain" and "Captain"!
re: Why do so many teams want Lane Kiffin as its head coach?
Posted by Rowdy Mcflowdy on 11/16/25 at 8:02 pm to homemadeshine
It's pretty simple for me. He's young relatively speaking, an interesting personality, guys want to play for him, and his career trajectory is pointing up. Others in the conversation are not seemingly as dynamic.

When exactly have we been beloved?? LSU has never gotten the love or recognition we deserved or earned until it was late in the 2019 season and it was obvious we were going to destroy everyone that stood in the way. I remember telling my wife as we were basking is the glow of the Clemson beat down - remember this feeling, savor it, look at all the headlines over and over because it will be gone before you know it and these memories will carry us through the tough times. And here we are peeps.

I totally agree with you. The man is not lazy and he has an ego like the rest of us. Probably bigger. Is there a chance he's a nice guy doing everything for the right reasons and wanting to succeed so badly but he's just not a good coach? Yes thats fair. I just totally believe he is a very good coach and is just struggling with with stuff he's never had to deal with before like coaching in the SEC and most importantly the NIL monster in the room. Prior to NIL the bluebloods of the SEC were where top recruits went because that carried weight in scouting circles. Now now you have a lot more parity than ever before. Vandy likely wouldn't have Pavia if it wasn't for NIL. We wouldn't have lost what's his lips to Michigan. It's rough time in college football right now. Saban saw that coming and knew it was time to retire. Gone are the days where a Boise State could go undefeated because they played a bunch of mediocre competition. You have 5 star prospects all over in every conference wrecking the status quo. Kelly has a shite show he is navigating. Arguably some of that is self induced by some mistakes he's made - primarily Sloan. Nuss is definitely serviceable. We've seen that from him but with our current OC who doesn't seem to coach to players strengths rather their talents its hard to succeed. We need an OC that is talented and diverse enough to work with what he's got rather the other way around. I'll shut up now except to say I would take Lane Kiffin in a heartbeat if I had the choice.

Thank you. Sounds like the same thing. I figure the truck running in good shape should be worth 10k maybe a little more because of how fantastic the truck is otherwise. So im thinking the smart thing to do is cam and lifters. Compression test first of course to make sure the bottom end is ok. But as I think about it the compression test won't work reliably with bad cam and lifters so it would just be a visual inspection of the cylinders once the heads are off. I feel pretty good that the bottom end is good though. It hasn't been run at all since the lifters left the chat. I have to find a shop that will be honest enough to tell me before proceeding if the bottom end looks bad.

Sorry, yes your right. I forget people on this board are Tiger fans and alumni from all over. Im in Baton Rouge. Distance to travel can't be too far because I'd have to tow it to a shop. It will start but is running so rough it dies at every stop.

Yes, I'm fully capable of doing the work. I spent my younger years as a tech and service writer for two different Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealerships in west Texas. I just don't have the time or patience for it.

Yep very true. If i was going to keep it, that's the route I'd going for sure. With a shiny new Jeep though the truck needs to find a new home.

I would totally love to do that because the sound of a cammed hot HEMI is music to my ears but I have the Jeep now so the truck is taking up too much driveway real estate. I just want to fix it without sinking too much money into it.
RAM HEMI Repair Shop

I'm sorry if this is not the right forum to post this in so im posing here after searching for postings for help landed me here. By the way it would be great if this great site had an "Automotive" section.
So I'm posting to ask if anyone here has recommendations for a shop that they can recommend to repair a Hemi 5.7 engine with a lifter/cam issue. My beloved 2013 Ram that has meticulously maintained left me stranded one day as I was returning to the hospital to be with my wife who was recovering from cancer surgery after a quick shower. Truck is beautiful and looks tough with a level kit and larger tires. Always ran perfect but with 160k miles she finally gave up I guess. Now I am a former CDJR tech so I can do a lot but certain things I can't due to HOA restrictions. Best I can tell after my checking things out one of the lifters seized and flat spotted the cam. Checked everything I can without taking apart the engine to check the cam and lifters because HOA says I can't have a disassembled vehicle in my driveway and it's too big to close my garage when I'm working on it.
So I decided to buy a new vehicle that day, my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon which by the way amazing but I digress. I need to fix my truck to either sell it or just keep it. Problem is I don't trust just anyone to repair it. It's a complex repair. I'm looking for a competent repair shop that has experience replacing cam and lifters on a Hemi. If my garage was big enough if do it myself but it isn't unless I tell my wife she's got to keep her car outside till the truck is fixed which is asking for a marital disaster. So I'm hoping I can fix it or sell it as is. I won't let it go for less than 5k because other than it runs like crap because of the cam and lifters it's a gorgeous truck with a ton of new stuff and every option available and some that have been added.
Anyhow if you actually read the whole thing and can help, send some recommendations my way. Geaux Tigers!
