The flight hardware is on an Intuitive Machines (IM) mission, scheduled to launch on a SpaceX platform. Likely summer. The LSU part is done, it's delays from launch partners etc.

LSU's hardware - custom design and integration and approach - will be going to the moon.

It is an LSU trademark so in theory you can order sweatshirts hats etc. I've seen stickers.
Katie (Art student) designed the logo as part of a senior art competition class as LSU was permitted to name the mission and design the mission patch. Her design won, and LSU trademarked it.
Yes, of course. I meant for federally reported research numbers (ie NSF HERD data).
The law school’s research in areas like energy, subsurface, minerals etc will be critical in coming years on the CCUS discussion. Have a colleague working a project w folks there in cyber law and they’ve been singing praises.

As someone who had courses at both, the difference in faculty and caliber of student was on separate planets.
That is admittedly anecdotal, but as someone who in a previous career also had the opportunity to scratch a lot of things and peek behind curtains at every institution in the state, the difference is stark. LSU is unlimited potential; there are pockets of pretty dang good at other places but it will never scale or compete.
The other schools are leagues better at LSU on one front: messaging to people like state legislators.

They are correct that LSU reports research numbers to the federal government as A&M + Ag + Pennington, but that isn’t done to boost the numbers. There is no law research, and the feds require those numbers, and LSU reports them because those are “separate” campuses that in many ways share a singular physical campus.
If it really wanted to boost numbers it could include both medical schools too - many other universities do, but LSU’s are in separate cities so that’s harder to square.
What’s really galling is the assertion that UL is competitive in R&D or somehow more productive - dividing research funding by faculty doesn’t equal productivity. Much of their funding - which can indeed be counted - is tied to their New Iberia research operation, and that’s contract, not R&D. It’s a service.
That’s not to say LSU is doing well or better, though it has unreal potential.
It’s to say this person doesn’t really understand. There is no comparison.

Breville countertop oven. For the ROI, nothing has changed how we cook and do things in the house more than that oven - I didn't turn on my actual oven for years. Had an element go out one day on the old one and bought a new one that same day. We use it every day for something different.
It does everything and does it unbelievably well.

quote:You missed $5M. It's $75M, and that's coming from LCMC.
It says OLOL will put in $170 million of the $245 million in the first 10 years of the deal. What will the extra $70 million go toward and when will it be used?
$245M = $170M (OLOL) + $75M (LCMC).
From the release:
"LCMC Health has committed $75 million to revolutionize cancer research, treatment and outcomes in Louisiana and ensure a sustained talent pipeline for the state’s healthcare industry." All NCI designation with Health Science Center(s).
This was a very competitive process.

Shady? Come on. There was a public 9 page RFI issued by LSU, the Foundation, Athletics, and TAF together.
1. There was a competitive process. A Request for Information was issued in November. Proposals were due in December: RFI Summary
** No clue what "hydrocodonehelp" is but it's a site that just pulled the Business Report content which is now behind paywall.
2. The RFI covered R&D, athletics, sports medicine, athletics, student health, the new Science Building, and strategic partnerships for the LSU System to pursue National Cancer Institute designation.
There was an extensive full proposal and review process.
Read the press release. It has a lot more detail including specific breakdowns on distributions into the programs requested in RFI: LSU, OLOL, LCMC Press Release
LCMC is NCI designation partner. Looks like OLOL is everything else.
NCI designation is among highest LSU strategic priorities.

Can you think of anything in the past 10 years?
Yes, several but everyone was/is under NDA.
"In the running for but didn't get" means different things. Some were just bad luck and timing. Incentives are not why companies locate; incentives are why companies take the initial conversation and they may help close the deal but more as a signal toward the company's board that the state is willing to help de-risk what is inherently a risky proposition, irrespective of location.
Once the discussions around talent and alignment are underway, everything becomes secondary. The political types have very little influence over those discussions, as it becomes quickly clear - particularly in technology - that the regional or local stakeholders have limited value add.
There are ways to do this well, aggressively, and unified, but that's for another thread.
LA has been close on several huge projects. There are several more in the works. All the ones I worked on across state that were lost were lost because of things LA couldn't control. A few crushing whiffs, because things change.
LA has significant enough assets and incentives to garner attention from surprising sources. Need alignment up the stack, not across.

quote:Sure. But we're having separate discussions. The school parishes needed a response with a level of capability, and the level that came in was better than what they had, and it was well-coordinated. The level of capability doesn't diminish the need.
My point, is that those of us who do this full time, don't do it for the Government anymore and sure as hell wouldn't attach ourselves to the weekend warrior project

quote:I won't say anything but will nod - colleagues working right of boom agree. Still, in the heat of the "WTF" having the CPT with some level of capability (vs Sabine Parish, no slight) was a big difference. TAG straight-on assessment: response was 7, without CPT and ESF-17 it's a 2.
lol...I'm deep in those weeds and it is way worse than the Guard knows
That's why this center is more than it looks. It's a physical instantiation of ESF, and working closely with research and capability partners enabled LANG and CPT access to advanced tools (AFRL joined the fight - TAG mentioned it at ceremony). There's plenty of these kinds of things to wave off...I'm saying this isn't one of them.

I don't work for LANG but can tell you the school cyber attacks would have been much worse had it not been for the preparedness and technical acumen of LANG's CPT.

boondoggle
Nope. S Campus has a cyber range and it's used to the train the Louisiana National Guard's Cyber Protection Team (CPT), which is a 39-person unit specifically activated by NG Adjutant General in the event of a cyber attack, just like the ones in Sabine and Morehouse. CPT was originally envisioned to be able to respond to potential compromises of critical infrastructure, but talk to the Adjutant General and he is adamant
1. Without the CPT and the support of professionals from some of those organizations listed, those schools may not have opened on time, and
2. The Emergency Support Function (ESF-17) organized in part by the Gov Cyber Commission was integral in coordinating response, and that was led by STC (LSU's affiliate for defense work).
This is huge news, way bigger than available. You need to look big picture.
And it's not a $1.5M center - that $1.5m investment is for the Guard's lease and the necessary security provisions to conduct work.
Beyond having a dedicated Guard response and training environment for the Guard in the Capitol region (which didn't exist until Tuesday), this puts the Guard directly in the fight and puts them next door to organizations - STC and Radiance, a $700M+ DOD contractor - who are actively working on solutions for Federal customers.
I wouldn't call this major economic development news. I'd call it the no-BS people doing important work that will be a precursor to major economic development news.

The day Chicken hit publish .
The company's website outlines their verticals; I think a couple of these will become very compelling w the NOLA location (healthcare in particular). More interesting will be the "transformation" methodology as it relates to delivery and deployment. The cross-functional capability development in cyber, blockchain, AI/MLDL, and Big Data will have more impact on talent than the verticals, IMO.

I don't work for LED. But I've seen these before. This one is different.
This isn't movies. It isn't IBM.
It isn't onshoring, BPO relocation, nearshoring, or H1B-related.
It's broad, and transformative in approach not only in tactics but also structure, particularly as it relates to the strategic execution with higher education partners.
It's a tremendous win for LA.

Not making a judgment call against all of the other stories like this (like N LA last year, for example), but one check in the "noteworthy" column is that we are a Capital region. Would the coverage be different if this were Austin? I think it might be but I don't think national news media cares that much about TX either but it likes Austin because it's weird and brisket or some crap.
One thing for sure is that the national media's power is in what it doesn't show.

A lot of it is. I do neural nets, decision trees, etc. as well as traditional logistic techniques. My work is currently being used to predict which students are at risk of dropping out at LSU, which prisoners can safely be released at the DOC (well, it is about to be used there, been working on that project), who to recruit for success, which financial brokers to invite to your investment firm, and a few other things.

There are ongoing statistical modeling projects on everything from virus transmission to biological forensics to chemical process intensification across multiple agencies, and one of our best modeling partners is currently working on novel capabilities for the Dept of Defense and several S&T directorates. If any of that is of interest, we should chat.

Anyone have any visibility into UClub area w/ Manchac overflow? Just trying to get decent assessment - pretty sure they're ok there (they are not near Manchac).
Looks like Manchac actually starts and flows that way instead of other way around

Don't remember actual stat but I believe Austin and BR had roughly same population 40-50 years ago. I am sure the LA to TX numbers are pretty big.
