Grew up in New Orleans and miss the food. We have found some good places in Hoover though. Tortugas in the strip mall across from Wal-Mart on Hwy 150 in Hoover has great stuffed pizza. Harry's Place on Hwy 31 (South of I-459)in Hoover has very good burgers. If you want good Italian, Salvatore's on Hwy 31 (North of I-459) in Hoover is excellent. Not much for ambiance, but the owner is from New York and knows good food.

J.Alexanders on the Galleria Mall Ring Road is good. Similar to Houston's. And as previously mentioned, New Orlands Food and Spirits on Hwy 31 in Vestavia is owned by the same family with restaurants of the same name in the New Orleans area and is very good too.
