“From all reports”, it sounds like we should have some quality competition/depth on defense.

DL: Thompkins, Green and Simmons to start, with Ed Hill, Steve Mboumoua, Faga and Beaman to spell them is very solid on paper. Beaman was supposed to be a key contributor last year before going down for the year vs FSU. I’ve got pretty high hopes for him and Steve M. Faga has created some buzz this offseason and last - high motor guy. The Bandit group probably gives me the most worry of the spots across the front.

Wolf/OLB: Pierre is a known. Justin Hill looks to be a VERY good player too. The freshmen Matthews is a big kid and has lots of potential. Other freshman Xavier Griffin likely to get looks at OLB in pass rush situations as well.

ILB: I see Woodson and Reese as “starters” but competition is intense in this room. Metz and Sanders have gotten a lot of reps and apparently have shined. Duke Johnson, Cayden Jones and Xavier Griffin are wild cards here. I feel any combination of these guys have a “serviceable” floor.

CBs: strong across the board. Zabien and Lee Jr may be the best tandem in CFB this year. Strong “starter quality” depth behind them.

Husky: Red Morgan is experienced and a pretty damn good player. I’ve seen Mincey and McDonald mentioned here as well. Mincey was quietly a solid player for us last year. Jireh Edwards likely to be involved here as well.

FS/SS: Sabb and Hubbard is great starting point here. We know what we have with them. Taylor will for sure see action at one of the two spots this year. Dre K Jr. a wild card here who could earn some minutes. Same with Jireh Edwards but if he’s taking reps from the aforementioned, this guy is likely a first round NFL draft pick type talent at safety.

All in all, I feel good about the defense. Wommack and that group need to show out this year. I like his scheme/philosophy overall, but I’m not crazy about the Bandit position; Regularly dropping a 265+ lb pass rush guy in space or to the flat is… stupid. Having Dez Zulu line up at 3i is a recipe for disaster. Saw it multiple times in ADay.

JD Pickell

Is a watered down version of Josh Pate. Should not put much stock into what either has to say.

This Bama squad will be interesting. We’ve got some good talent for sure, but how intense and tough are they? We haven’t been tough and mean(!) on the OL or DL since like 2020 (really since 2017 for the DL).

Can’t have Ryan Williams being scared of contact or making a tough play over the middle.

RBs need to step up and crush blitzing rushers.

I want the OL to finish blocks every play and make the opponents’ Saturdays a four quarter living nightmare. If an opposing defender cheap shots our QB after the whistle, Michael Carroll & Co. better go to war on the field right then and there.

It’s a new regime and this is a young team. We need some mean as frick junkyard dawgs to step up and lead this team, and set the bar for everyone else. Do we have guys like that? I don’t know.

Keelon's pocket presence concerned me.

That is just how he plays, similar to BY and Tua. The dude can pull up and let it rip on a dime; he uses his legs to draw the defense up and will weigh his passing options downfield until the last possible second - see ULM live game film from last year.

Reminded me of Manziel dancing around in the backfield in terms of footwork quality.

Are you talking about Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel? The one who made Nick Saban’s defense look silly two years in a row? I’ll take it.

The seam throw to Meadows

I’ve only seen highlights of the seam throw to CD Morgan, which couldn’t have been better and would have been completed in a real game even with the rush. Can you link the throw down the seam to Meadows?

and that touchdown over the DB on the sideline (one where the db jumped 5 yards forward for no reason)

This is probably a valid take. He was late getting that one out. Likely would have been sacked, or on the run for his life at a minimum.

0 and 6 will never be SEC RB's.

Way too early to tell on #0.

Agree in that #6 should not be a feature back for us.
Probably Junior JD (or his first year at LSU) in year 1, in relative command much of the year with some plays overestimating his abilities and flashes that make your jaw drop. Once he settles in mentally and things slow down for him, you will be watching a NFL first round pick.
Their legs made those guys so dynamic, but their ability to throw accurately on the run was the real game changer. I believe Russell has “it”. Will take some time to develop with processing and reaction speed, but this dude looks like he will be a great one.

But again, this team will go as far as the OL and DLs allow. Have to be “very good” in both those rooms at a minimum to do anything as a team this year (every year).
Keelon looks like he will be special. If he is comfortable back there in SEC play, watch out.. Jayden Daniels 2.0.

Can’t take too much away from a scrimmage. My biggest question going into the season is how physical are we on OL & DL. Still no clue what we have there. Justin Hill, QB Reese and Woodson look like players. We have talent; we need the intensity and toughness to compliment it, and we will be really solid this year.
And by the grace of God, we are all fortunate enough to have YStar’s infinite wisdom showered upon this board.

Dude’s a legend in his own mind

Yeah, I was looking at our transfers just now, and figured he's the most likely candidate. He looks imposing.

Fifth from the left in the crimson UA shirt (I think it’s TF Corey Howard) is also built like a freak.

Look at the list of True Freshmam LBs that started under CNS: - Rolando McClain
- Donte Hightower
- Reggie Ragland
- CJ Mosely
- Christian Harris (played Cornerback as a Senior at University Lab (1A) in Baton Rouge
- Trey Depriest (injury wrecked his career)
- Dylan Moses (same)
- Rashaad Evans
Many others who played a lot as well:
- Jihaad Campbell (rotated with Trez Marshal/was start in Semi-Final game vs Michigan)
- Reuben Foster (making the calls was the only reason he didn’t start day 1)

And these guys have what to do with Xavier Griffin?

These guys listed were coached by some of the best defensive minds in the game - some of these defensive coaches being historically great. That is no longer the situation in Tuscaloosa.

CJ Mosley 2.0 is a big frickin ask too. You think Griffin will be one of the best ILBs in the conference (which is incredibly watered down, particularly from a defensive standpoint, compared to when Mosley was in TTown) on Day 1?

Look, I think X. Griffin will be a good player for us at some point, but a lot of your takes are overly optimistic to the point of delusion.

Again, I would point to the fact that they have allowed the 10th fewest points and 13th fewest yards over the past 2 seasons (cumulatively) while also producing the FIFTH most turnovers during that same span…..they are also doing things to WIN football games

What you continue to fail to acknowledge in any of your posts regarding the Year 1 and Year 2 defenses, is the fact that nearly all of the dudes who were major contributors to the success of those defenses have graduated, gone to the NFL, or will be on other teams this upcoming season. And I am VERY skeptical that we upgraded the front seven during this recent portal cycle. I hope I’m wrong.
It seems that this staff likes to recruit long, rangy athletes on the DL (typically guys that play edge in high school) and have them grow into DTs once on campus. Similar to Jeremiah Beaman. In addition to Franklin, I could see Nolan Wilson ending up playing inside as well.
quote:

Besides depth, what did we lose with Renaud leaving ?

A likely starter next year and a dude who was first off the bench/split reps with LT Overton this past season.

They don’t have eye popping stats, but James Smith, Keeley, Renaud and Russaw had a lot of good moments between them this past season. I might have this wrong, but I believe I read that our defense was Top 2 in the SEC to finish the regular season? Posters are pointing to the stat sheets to justify the notion that these guys leaving is no big deal. Them deciding to transfer - it is what it is, but it almost certainly does not help us.

Roach needs to go and we need a real DL coach that can get these guys to play like some mean sons of bitches.
Damn was hoping Keeley would reconsider and come back. He was finally starting to look like a ball player for us last year.

Wish we could have retained him, James Smith and Noah Carter if it was financially feasible/prudent. Couldn’t care less about anyone else that’s leaving.
quote:

The misevaluations and inability to land elite guys there by Saban at the end of his tenure and in a couple years of Deboer has been a major reason for our defensive run game struggles.

Tim Smith (from the 2020 cycle), Damon Payne, and James Smith were all considered elite prospects out of high school. Many others were considered blue chip prospects out of high school. Our struggles on the DL are due to Freddie Roach and virtually no development within that group once they get to UA. That said, you are absolutely correct saying we have been snubbed by many (nearly all) elite DL targets since ~2017.

Our scheme under KW, imo, is also not conducive to stopping the run upfront or having the DL play as a single unit. Essentially, we need a superstar upfront to regularly disrupt other teams’ rushing attacks.
Systems and processes make organizations successful. This has been true in the past, remains true today and will continue to hold true in the future. This applies across nearly everything in life.

Yes, the landscape of college football has changed with the portal and NIL, but you are speaking as if the introduction of those things has erased all coachable players and the ability for managers to implement their systems and processes in a demanding way. There are still many driven individuals out there. It’s about attracting the right individuals.

Saban’s “process” is not unique to him. There are people who are held to a high standard and intense scrutiny every single day and achieve success. They show up each and every day, and Do Their Job. They buy-in and carry themselves as professionals, regardless of how much they are receiving in compensation.
You guys have already covered it - but it’s pathetic that these are the types of questions that some of these “reporters” are asking our guys ahead of the game. The portal questions are so shallow it’s almost unbelievable that multiple players have been asked this. A total waste of breath to even ask a player this.

I really wish Ryan could spend a day or two with Devonta Smith training with him and talking about what it takes to be the best. Smitty worked his arse off and was focused. Ryan could learn a lot from him.

This happened over the offseason.
quote:

How do you juggle that?

Because at the end of the day he is just not good. He is kind of fast (he is very fast relative to me). That’s about it. No hands / catches with face mask and body. Not a good route runner. No hands. What do you have in that?
Grubb is actually clinically retarded.
Time for a Grubb special trick play for -12 on 1st down with a chance to kill them
