My husband tells lots of stories of his family being segregated amongst blacks. They were not quite passé blanc, but they still created communities only accessible to other light skinned blacks. They discriminated against any black darker than a paper bag. Slavery has left us with quite a legacy and it goes way deeper than mere black and white. It's legacy permeates and reeks havoc on the black community to this day with us being very judgemental towards each other because of the color of our skin.

They got great educations on the state's dime. A family friend got her Phd from northwestern! That's a REAL PhD!
I love talking to older black people in my family because the strength and resolve and faith they had are really lost on my generation. My family has simply had no excuses for mediocrity. My sister feels like a failure bevause she has only a bachelors from Notre Dame!
My grandmother used to pick strawberries with a masters degree; she did what she had to to survive. My father grew up using an outhouse and tells stories of how he used to get in trouble bc he would burn the maggots. His mom said "are you crazy! That's how we process the waste!" He was on southerns campus when those two young men were murdered by the police. My entire moms side is from lake providence. You wouldn't believe the indignities they faced. They were basically sharecroppers for the white farmers in LP. The blacks lived (and live) on one side of the lake (and a few whites interspersed) and the white landowners lived (live) on the other side. Those people had LOTS of kids (grandmother was one of 13). BUT education, family, responsibility, were stressed. I interviewed a family member who is a judge for a school paper. He worked in the fields all summer and for part of the school year. He still grew up to attend Boston College, go to law school and succeed. Black people today are so disconnected from our ancestors' struggles and many of us really take the past for granted. If we talked more to these people, maybe our communities would strengthen. Done with rant.

My grandfather went to an HBCU for undergrad. He wanted to earn his masters but neither SU nor grambling (the only two HBCUs in the state) had the program, so technically, this was a violation of his plessy rights. So, the state paid for him to earn his masters degree in another state to keep him from trying to get into LSU. This was pretty common practice and there are quite a number of blacks who will have undergrad degrees from SU or Grambling and advanced degrees from places like NYU (family friend) or Northwestern (THE northwestern-another family friend).
Also, my mother's father was born in 1902 in Mississippi. He lived to be 98 and had a clear mind right up until the end. He had some crazy stories; I remember when they were showing the commercials for Titanic. He said, "oh I remember that. That's when all those white folks drowned." I said, "papa, you don't renenber that!" Then I thought about it. That was a major story. He would have remembered it. I often wish he had lived to see the election of Presudent Obama; he wouldn't have believed it. I also have a bunch of family members from lake providence. They often talk about not being able to swim in the lake and picking cotton, pecans, etc. Many of them are very successful now and I ask them what motivated them being dirt poor in the midst of segregation. They simply say that they knew they didn't want to continue to live like that.

A family friend died a few days ago. He was a former state representative and a WWII vet who went in after the atomic bombs were dropped. It's surreal to meet those people and speak with them.

Thank you for the insight, but this isn't a political topic. It's a question of ethics. Also, the shooting of these cops/Michael brown has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. This is directly related. If people are going to criticize alleged chants urging the murdering of police, this type of outrageous behavior should be known.

Not surprising. I knew a "black creole" family that had two sons. One son identified as white and married a white woman and assimilated into white America, and one identified as black and married a black woman. So, their kids were first cousins but didn't really acknowledge each other because the "white side" was passé blanc.

I went to Disney World when I was five months pregnant, and it was fun! I didn't ride anything except It's a small world and some boat rides in Epcot but my husband still had fun. I walked around with my parents while my siblings ran around with my husband and things like the Hall of Presidents etc were still fun. My back was really hurting one day, so I rented a hover around and I was fine! The food is good too and that's always a plus for a pregnant woman.

I accept personal responsibility, work everyday, and contribute quite a bit to society and I'm sad senator Landrieu lost. I do find it funny that you called us hypocrites when one of Cassidy's biggest supporters is one of the biggest hypocrites in this state, and soon idiots in this state will make him our governor. I guess its ok to be a lying hypocrite who employs the services of a Madame if you have an "R" behind your name.

As a black woman, neither I nor my friends melted about Senator Landrieu losing; we melted about our friends being too stupid to exercise their right to vote. Generally, educated people are friends with educated people, so one would assume that educated blacks would understand the history of this nation and would vote. However, a large portion of blacks stayed home and it's disgusting.
I also melted because at my white precinct in BR, they attempted to disenfranchise me because they assumed (correctly) that I supported the senator. When I tried to vote using my military ID I was told I couldnt because military ids don't have an address on them. It wasn't until hell was raised that they relented when their supervisor told the workers to allow me to vote. I did melt over that.

Are you serious? There's more than voting records that can be vetted. Senator Obama's platform was much more clear than Dr.Cassidy's. Anyway, you'll get your wish. She's gone. I voted for her, as did my family, but it won't be enough.

Well, that wasn't my experience. However before I could raise too much sand, they called someone over. Maybe she was the boss, anyway, she told the workers to allow me to vote. I don't know if it was because they really thought you couldn't use an ID without the address listed or if it was because I was black. Whatever the cause, it was a real insult to my husband who is the sponsor. Federal ID trumps state anytime.

I'm not joking at all. An address isn't listed on a military Id and my purse is full of crap and I just throw stuff in it. So, when I couldn't find my DL, I just grabbed my military id. They said I couldnt use it bc it didn't have an address listed.
