re: “Heading cuts” on newly transplanted trees?
Posted by Sheepdog1833 on 2/22/26 at 1:33 pm to Sheepdog1833
This is what AI says:
Generally speaking, no, do not do this right now. While "heading cuts" (clipping the tips) can technically force side buds to grow, doing this to a newly transplanted 30-gallon Oak and 15-gallon Maple in Covington can actually backfire.
Here is why you should hold off on the "one-inch clip" rule:
1. Transplant Shock vs. Growth
Your trees just went through a major "surgery" by being moved. Their current priority is growing roots, not more leaves.
• Energy Loss: The tips of the branches contain specific hormones (auxins) that tell the roots to grow. If you clip them all off, you disrupt that signal.
• The "Survival" Rule: A newly planted tree needs every leaf it has to create energy (photosynthesis) to repair its root system.
2. Form and Structure
Oaks and Maples are "excurrent" trees, meaning they naturally want one strong central leader (the main trunk going up).
• The Messy Bush Effect: If you clip every branch tip, you'll get a "witch’s broom" effect where the tree becomes a thick, bushy ball. This is fine for a hedge, but for a shade tree, it creates weak branch attachments that are more likely to break during a Louisiana hurricane.
3. Species-Specific Risks
• Nuttall Oak: These are already incredibly fast. Clipping them can make the canopy too dense, preventing wind from blowing through the tree, which increases the risk of it blowing over in a storm.
• Red Maple: Maples are susceptible to various fungi in our humidity. Making dozens of small cuts all over the tree creates "open doors" for disease while the tree's immune system is already stressed from the move.

“Heading cuts” on newly transplanted trees?
Posted by Sheepdog1833 on 2/22/26 at 1:30 pm
I just purchased a 15 gallon red maple and a 30 gallon nuttall oak. It was suggested by the seller to clip once inch off of each branch to force multiple buds for branches. AI says no.

re: Concrete with mesh or fiber
Posted by Sheepdog1833 on 2/4/26 at 10:20 am to Royalfishing
Municipalities are all using fiber.
I think it’s because it’s easier to break out in the future if repairs are needed.
I like using fiber as it doesn’t require labor to install correctly.
It runs between $6-$10 per cubic yard.

Saw a car with matte gunmetal color in the showroom. I love the look.
But there were handprints on all of the touch points.

Daughter is riding home from March for Life in DC to Slidell.
They are currently just north of Knoxville.
Call my nerves that they won’t run into icy road conditions through Chattanooga and Birmingham.

Mind saying what insurance company?
I have Blue Cross.
Their website says it’s covered, but the pharmacist says it’s pulling up that it doesn’t.

Just like most everyone I’d assume, I’m more concerned about the young kids and wife who just had a hysterectomy last week.
The oldest with the flu is vomiting pretty good. So I’ll try anything that’ll help the others.
Anyone doing Tamiflu prophylactically?

I’ve seen this pop up recently on social media.
My oldest was just diagnosed with Flu Type A this evening.
He started Tamiflu but wondering if Oscillococcinum is a good prophylactic for the rest of the family.

New York - Broadway trip in February
Posted by Sheepdog1833 on 12/19/25 at 2:23 pm
I’m sending my wife and daughter to see a couple Broadway shows for Mardi Gras break.
Is staying close to Broadway in Hell’s Kitchen a good idea safety wise?
Any other suggested spots?

re: Strabismus surgery as an adult
Posted by Sheepdog1833 on 12/16/25 at 3:23 pm to Crescent Connection
I’ve had it done twice within the past year and have to say I’m not happy with the results.
I’ve had it since childhood and it always nagged me even into adulthood. Prior I did not wear glasses or have vision problems.
First surgery was in February, both eyes. One muscle in one eye. Two in the other. Took a couple of weeks before I felt comfortable to drive because of the new alignment causing a bit of “overlapping” vision as best as I can describe.
Both eyes stayed aligned for about a month then one began to veer outward and up, opposite than before.
I elected to have surgery again in November to correct the one outward eye. Almost immediately I knew it wasn’t corrected enough.
I’m debating my options moving forward. If I stop at this point, it want worth it for me.

To answer your question, I’m not sure.
I’m an amateur.
My daughter plays a good amount on it and I want to give her something moving forward as she goes off to college.
She may have interest in playing gigs so I was maybe thinking electronics on it but not 100% convinced of that.

Looking for an upgrade with a budget of $500 before taxes and set up.
Can I get something in that range with meaningful upgrades?
