I see! I just looked up the designs also. It’s funny how all the instate Alabama schools have good designs but all of the out of state colleges get a plain white plate with a very small logo.
Ok, another tidbit. When applying for an out of state uni plate, there are 2 options. You can either go for the plate design we have (logo on the left, 5 characters) where you have to get 250 pre-paid commitments within a year. If you don't meet your 250 in a year, you have to start all over.
The second option is a logo on the left, 6 characters, and an additional row of text on the bottom. This design requires 1000 pre-paid commits within a year.
We decided to go for option 1 with the 250 prepaid commits. In 4 yrs when we are required to resubmit a new design and by then we should have over 1000 plates, we can then have a new design with a different logo and perhaps "Louisiana State University" or "Geaux Tigers" whatever on the bottom. We'll worry about that when we get there. We're just thrilled to have a plate.

It's a win-win for Alabama because all the revenue from these LSU plates go back into the Alabama's general fund
Not all of it. A portion goes to LSU in some capacity. Not for sure on AL but in TX the plate is $30 and like $22 goes to LSU.
No sir. Each state is different. That may be true in Texas, but as I stated above, here in the state of Alabama, out of state university license plates fall under a different set of rules. Here the cost of distinctive plates is $50/yr plus fees. If your distinctive plate is for an organization such as Save the Cahaba River, a percentage of that $50 does go back to your organization. However, if it is an LSU, MS State, Ole Miss, Georgia or FSU plate, all of the $50 goes to the Alabama general fund and none of it goes to the Universities.

I love this! I never understood why some states are so against allowing out of state universities to have a plate. Texas has damn near any college you can think of. It’s crazy.
I agree. I don't see why Louisiana doesn't follow suit. It's a win-win for Alabama because all the revenue from these LSU plates go back into the Alabama's general fund.

Can you use special characters and spaces?
Spaces yes, but not sure about special characters.
You have some good ones. It's good that the DMV will let you know quickly on their website whether your personalization is available or not. Personally I would not pick something "mean" on my plate like UAH8R or FBAMA because I wouldn't want already increase the chance of my vehicle being vandalized

Are you asking about my vehicle logo? It's a Toyota.

couldn't get STTDB
There's a webpage where you can check what's available and STTDB is "unavailable". So that either means they're not allowing it or someone else in the state already has STTDB on their license plate.

However, if Alabama says the ALEA offices are Still Closed, I'm guessing this can't be done by mail?
Most offices are open now at least here in Birmingham. I say most because some may not have the staff to open completely.
Each may also have different social distancing rules in place. It would be best to call your nearest office and inquire. Some will do by mail, email or even over the phone

All the above had already been taken

Thanks @BillyGibbons. I was excited that I managed to get those personalizations as we are limited to 5 characters and most of the good ones were all taken already.

Story in the Advocate
>> The Official date has been announced! Plate orders can be placed on April 1, 2020! <<
>>> Post Pre-Commitment LSU Distinctive Plate FAQ <<<
Q: IF I DID NOT PREORDER AN LSU LICENSE PLATE CAN I STILL GET ONE?
A: Yes, on April 1, 2020 you go into any Revenue office in the state and place your order for a plate. If that office has a preprinted plate and you do not wish to personalize it, you may get one immediately. Otherwise you will be issued a temporary plate until your plate arrives in the mail.
Q: How will I be notified when the LSU license plate is available?
A: Each person who pre-ordered a license plate will receive an email with a voucher attached. This email will inform you the date when the license plate will be available.
Q: How do I get my plate?
A: Once you receive the email and voucher, print the voucher and take it to any Revenue office in the state. The same place you would normally go to register a new vehicle. If that particular office does not have an LSU tag available, ie others have taken their supply, they will issue you a temporary tag and will mail you the plate.
Q: Can I request a plate with a special number of phrase?
A: Yes. When the tag is available, you can request special wording on the tag, limited to 5 letters/numerals. ie "LSU 8."
Q: If I redeem my voucher before my renewal date, will I be charged another $50 fee when my tag otherwise renews during my renewal month?
A: Yes.
Q: At what point can we submit a different plate design?
A: All distinctive plates must be renewed every five years. In the renewal year, if the plate has over 1,000 orders outstanding, a whole plate design can be submitted for approval.
Q: When and where are we going to have the Victory Celebration for the 250 Charter members?
A: We are working with LSU Alumni leaders in South Alabama, but the first celebration Jambalaya dinner will be in Birmingham on April 4.
Q: Where can I check to see if the plate is available for order?
A: Once the plate becomes available for order/production, it should be posted at this page

Hello Kingpin123. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but since the precommitment period has ended, unfortunately you won't be able to place an order for it until the AL Dept of Revenue processes our request and begins production of the plate. We were told this will take 2 to 3 months. I will post here when it is available for order or you may check this page to see if it is available.

The one where u signed up for the plate
Here is the original LINK but as your friends will see at the link, the precommitment period has ended since we hit our 250 last night. It is now in the hands of the AL Dept of Revenue and we all have to wait (what we were told 2 to 3 months) until the plate becomes available for production. Once the plate becomes available to the general public, it should be posted at this site for ordering LINK
I will try to post here when that date becomes available. Encourage your Alabama friends and family to still order one because if we hit 1000, we can redesign the plate to add "Louisiana State University" at the bottom and/or use a different logo for example.

The application process involved reaching out to the trademark office in Baton Rouge. They had the final say in how the logo will appear. Most of us would have preferred the "eye" or even the tiger head, but we are happy to just get something. In a couple of years when we get 1000 plates, we may submit a redesign.
