re: Louisiana Fantasy Sports Bill

I would have voted against it to. And i'm pro-sports betting. The issue, for me, was the ridiculous 15% tax rate. Why do we treat industries differently? Everyone should be on a level playing field and the government doesn't deserve more taxes because it's considered a vice.

I think you misinterpreted this.

The 15% tax (it was actually bumped up to 18.5% in the final bill) would be a tax on the Fantasy Sports administrators, on the fees that they charge Louisiana residents for playing their game. Essentially, the money that a national business is taking OUT of the state. The Tax of 18.5% would keep a portion of it in the state for allowing them to come in and have access to our pool of money.

I believe the casinos have to pay something similar, so this was put in so the competition for our gambling dollars is on an even playing field, I guess. As if we're all sitting at home thinking "Hmmm, will I open up this fantasy sports app and get additional entertainment while I watch the ballgames tonight or will I just go to the casino instead?"
You can supposedly get a UPS Store address across state lines if it's a reasonable travel distance. However, that's a W-2 being issued to another state that will be
looking for some sort of tax filing at the end of the year.
Have you personally had success with a VPN? I tried several and Draftkings/FanDuel still detected my location as being in Louisiana and I was denied entry.
Disgusted in the outcome of this. The public voted overwhelmingly in support of passing legislation for Fantasy Sports last fall.

This is a non-partisan post, just laying out the facts of what happened.

Fantasy Sports was set to pass with relative ease, however Jefferson Parish Republican Danny Martiny was upset at Jefferson Parish Republican Cameron Henry for not supporting his Sports Betting bill. Danny Martiny stonewalled the voting of the Fantasy Sports Bill in the Senate as time expired, thus we have neither. However, the public never voted on Sports Betting, we voted for the passage of Fantasy Sports. Martiny had no right to sabotage the Fantasy Sports bill.

As far as voting goes, in the House the Fantasy Sports Only bill was voted against by 22 Republicans and 1 Democrat. In the Senate, 10 Republicans voted against the bill vs 2 Democrats (John Milkovich is not a Democrat).

It's highly disappointing that the people spoke up and said we wanted access to Fantasy Sports wagering, yet we were overruled by a bunch of Status Quo politicians that constantly take actions to keep this state set back 100 years.

The worst part is that this would have provided a ton of additional tax revenues that would come straight from the Fantasy Sports companies and not directly from our citizens!

Imagine that, we are now being passed up by Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas! You can wager on Fantasy Sports in all of those other states, but not here! It's amazing that we're OK with coming up dead last in everything and yet we keep electing the same crotchety Out-of-Touch old men that have represented this state forever. It's passed time we got some young people involved that respect the will of the people and don't immediately suck up to large corporate interests.
