American expats called them Jumeirah Janes (Jumeirah is a section of Dubai where many Americans lived in the 70's-90's). Dad dressed like one for a Mardi Gras costume party at their place.
My folks were there almost 20 years. I was there for 4 years, in jr high thru 1984. Some wild parties - jr high kids wasted off their parents' liquor cabinets (westerners could buy alcohol). One company flew in 500lbs of live crawfish from LA for a crawfish boil.
It really was remarkably safe from crime and outside attacks. Many expats stayed through the Iranian hostage crisis, Iran-Iraq war, Gulf war, etc. Many extremists know better than to bite the hand that feeds them, as some rich Gulf Arabs are thought to fund them on the down low. But Arabs never liked the Persians/Iranians (they called the Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf).
Virtually no one steals, as they would do real time if caught. My mom was once blocked in by someone who double parked near a shopping strip. When the lady finally came out she said "well I left the key!" - she expected someone to hop in and move her car if they needed to get out.
If you're with an oilfield service company or a local company, the pay was good but not great. And there was no retirement plan. After 20 years dad got an end of service "gratuity" of less than one year's salary. And since he wasn't paying into Social Security all those years, he doesn't get a full social security check.

Kirkpatrick said new tactics and additional training helped officers spot guns along the parade route. “A lot of time, bad actors who are not following the law who are not carrying a gun in a holster, say they tuck it into a pocket. That’s a negligent carry. Our officers have been trained to look for things that are violations of the law,” she said.
Kirkpatrick praised the help of state and federal agents, including the National Guard in the French Quarter. She said the Guard’s presence prompted someone to abandon a bag near Conti and Bourbon Street on Feb. 8 at 2 a.m. “We came across an abandoned backpack with a weapon and a drum magazine in it. We believe that was a direct result of the National Guard being present and them knowing they would be searched and abandoned it,” Kirkpatrick said.
Prior to Mardi Gras, the FBI conducted a three-week roundup of the city’s most violent offenders. Kirkpatrick said the FBI arrested 175 people before they could reach the parade route.

re: Nashville is getting a taste of what is coming to New York.

Nashville's problem is two-fold. Throngs of bachelorette parties and other drunk tourists spending $10 for a domestic beer. Bar owners are printing money, leading to record prices for real estate. Todd Graves paid $75 million for the Margaritaville building ($2,870/sf).
Second, the city doesn't lower the millage to bring in about the same amount of tax revenue, so record property values = record property taxes for the whole area, based on recent comps. Curious to see what happens to the few older, smaller clubs that maintain at least a semblance of authenticity - like Robert's, Layla's and Legend's. Looks like they'll be facing the same issues as Acme.

And I don't think my failure to be educated about the subject as a minor it left me (or my peers) at any disadvantage in life.

Really delightful experience.
Sums it up well. We went last week for a birthday.
Latest reservation we could get about a week in advance was 5:15 on a Saturday (it's been popular after recent press). Seating is cozy, as the inside dining area is small. There's more room on the screened porch but we didnt want to take a chance that it might be cold (it wasn't).
We were at a table for 2, next to another 2-top. The tables shared an antique couch, and it was interesting scooching between the tables. Awkard at first being so close, but we were able to see what the neighbors ordered, which helped guide our choices. Typical NOLA, we talked a bit with our neighbors, who were eating before a show at the Saenger.
Started with the Brin d'Amour sourdough with cranberries and figs on side and a big wedge of cheese on the plate, after seeing the plain bread our neighbors got. Wife had duck & andouille gumbo. I had an oyster bisque that the neighbor also ordered and the crab salad (marinated crabmeat served in a crab shell). Price no object, I may have gone with the gnocci with crabmeat and duck confit.
All was delicious and we ate light on purpose, as it was the first stop of a night of pub hopping in Algiers and Gretna. We also made it to Old Point, Rice Vice, Crown and Anchor (Coops Burgers was there), Amore' and Rivershack to close it out with some live music.
We talked to one of the proprietors on the back porch and they have plans to add cottages. It's a great property with huge oaks and plenty of area for receptions and events.

Yes you have to go to Algiers, but it is removed far enough from everything else to make you realize you aren't there!
People are definitely crossing the river for this one. We overheard others say they drove from MidCity and Bywater. Since we live in Algiers, we didn't have to "go" very far - it's nice to have a fine dining option just up the road. We'd likely only return for special occasions, but I'd pop in just for drinks in the bar or out back.

Audubon Commission also has a dedicated 1.71 mill property tax in Orleans,
That's the same amount NORD gets (NOLA recreation dept) and more than Parks & Parkways.

Meanwhile Forman was making about $800k/yr and had about $4 million of nonqualified retirement benefits when he retired (not counting "normal" 403(b) retirement plan).
Last time I was at the zoo I too saw folks just amble on through without showing a ticket. We used our library card to get tix, though you do have to reserve well in advance, as there's a cap.
When the kids were young we had a membership for a few years but it paid for itself after a couple visits. No chance we'd get one at those prices.

re: U.S. Military no longer supporting Scouts
Posted by CBDTiger on 11/25/25 at 2:39 pm to ghost2most
Cutting off support for the national Jamboree that occurs every 4 years would be no big deal, and apparently is the only change that requires justification to Congress.
However, severing all ties to Scouting would be a big misstep and the classic cutting off one’s nose to spite your face. The military went all-in on DEI, LGBTQ, and a woke agenda – even more so than the Scouts. Now Hegseth has fixed the military but says the Scouts are beyond repair and wants to cast them aside. Organizations change gradually over time and if we want to get the woke out of Scouting, the solution is not to chase out all of the military families and pinch the pipeline of Scouts that go on to military service. I read that 1/3 of military members have a scouting background, and 10% of service academy grads were Eagle scouts.
The local troops I know in our area have changed very little over the past 10+ years, even if some top-down changes have been pushed (e.g. Citizenship in Society merit badge). My son’s former troop remains an all-boy trip and still does a monthly campout, with 12 months of activities planned by the boys each September.
In just the last 5 years or so they’ve done Philmont twice (12-day summer trek in NM and a 5-day winter adventure trip), snow skiing, built monkey bridges, went snorkeling in Destin (stayed at NAS Pensacola), canoeing, kayaking at Swampbase in the the Atchafalaya, hiked the 12-mile Vicksburg battlefield trail, waterskiing, summer camp in NC, TN and GA, fishing at Grand Isle, crawfishing, skeet and target shooting, black powder rifles, horseback riding, and countless Eagle projects. We know we’re doing something right when parents remark how much their sons have changed after a high adventure trip like Philmont.
Several troop members have been kids of service members who joined troops at each deployment location. Their dads are great adult leaders, facilitating campouts on the property and even a tour of the control tower at NAS Belle Chasse for the aviation merit badge. Many troop members have gone on to military service, including an Annapolis grad who is in the nuclear sub program. One was an at risk borderline suicidal kid who got involved in scouting and has now been in the Army for 6 years. Scouting provides leadership and self reliance skills that is very hard to find elsewhere.
Honestly the main concern the Scouts have with recent changes from national involve rules that take risk (and some fun) out of it. Things like the bans on paintball, dodgeball, and no homemade zip lines (that was a thing on our wilderness survival trips), etc.
I’m not one to write to politicians but I can’t sit by and let 100 years of partnership with the military disappear with the stroke of a pen by someone who hasn’t a clue what goes on in a typical unit (most of which remain all-boy or all-girl troops).
TL; DR - There's still much to be gained by both the military and Scouting by continuing their long-standing relationship, and the core tenets of the organization foster incredible positive change in young men (and now women), when properly put into action by competent local units.

I think they a good idea whether they'll have an SRO crowd or room for tables and chairs and set up accordingly. Joshua Ray Walker played a couple years back and they had tables and chairs over most of the floor - he even said something about not being used to a setup like that. But it was a small crowd.

Veteran attorney Tom Mars, who has represented multiple high-profile college coaches in employment disputes, sharply criticized LSU’s approach; “No school has ever won a ‘termination for cause’ lawsuit — even when they could allege grounds with a straight face,” Mars said via X (formerly Twitter). “Thus, it seems unlikely that LSU could set a new precedent when everyone in college sports is laughing at them for taking a position that’s absolutely absurd.”
