Gloria - 1980

Is anyone else a fan of this movie?
Gena Rowlands is great in this. I was surprised at how intense the first 15 minutes are.
I read that John Cassavetes wrote the script just to sell it and never intended to make the movie.

The Hollywood Knights - 1980

Anyone else a fan of this movie? It's a total American Graffiti ripoff but it's so much fun.
Newbomb Turk, Officer Bimbeau, Dudley, Jimmy Shine.... Michelle Phieffer's first role.
Soundtrack is great and the hot rods are awesome. Pour one out for Tubby's - Home of The Big One!

Gaines is an interesting guy - successful writer, outdoorsman, and is credited with inventing paintball. I think he worked on Pumping Iron as well.

Anyone watched this? I'm not going to say this is a great movie, but I liked it.
It has Jeff Bridges, Sally Field, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Englund, and Roger Mosley.
It's based on a book written by Charles Gaines, who is a Birmingham, AL, native. It was filmed in Birmingham, and if you know downtown, you will recognize a lot in the film. There is a good shot of Sloss Furnace and a lot is filmed at The Club.
The third act takes a turn that reminds me of a Russ Meyer film.
It's worth a watch.
To Live and Die in L.A. - 1985

Anyone seen this? William Friedkin directed it. William Petersen gets a lot of praise for Manhunter (rightfully so), but he is just as good in this. When he says that he is going to bust Rick Masters no matter what, he means it. The car chase is iconic. Wang Chung does most of the music.
Blow Out - 1981

Anyone a fan of Blow Out? John Travolta is great in this. Nancy Allen is ok, but I like her much better in Dressed to Kill. John Lithgow is the perfect villian. I like how De Palma always opens with something that grabs your attention. The end of the film comes full circle, which is a nice touch. The Hitchcock influence is obvious.

Watched Tender Mercies for the first time a few weeks ago. He won an Oscar for it.

Robert Blake is great and so was Mitchell Ryan. Plot was a little loose and the motorcycle chase scene was not the best. I will never forget the ending though....
