re: The one thing I haven’t seen anyone mention, roster limits
Posted by N2daWild on 4/19/26 at 3:20 am to A Dog Named Chew
There was an exemption allowed this year letting teams retain players over the 34 limit that could have been adversely affected by the roster cut. Essentially allowing teams to go way over 34. LSU told Jay not to go over 40. Jay decided to go with the current 38, which includes Aase who will likely redshirt.
Roster size isn't the issue this year. Jay sacrificed defense to bring in some power bats. The bats aren't producing which is leaving us with a team that lacks defense and offense. Add to it, a new rotation and things aren't going our way.
There is still time for this team to be good but we are digging a hole right now.

Jay felt like his 2026 team needed to add power in the portal. He added Dardar, Yorke, Carraway and Simpson. He knew he was sacrificing defense for power. The problem is when those guys are not hitting we don't have offense or defense. We also have a few guys on the team that are trying to be power hitters when maybe they would be better served trying to hit for average.
Evans, Schmidt, Paz could be very good. Add Williams, possibly Rizy, Zion and Ricken. Guidry, Noot and Garcia could return for senior year. Plog is a sophomore and Sheerin is a redshirt sophomore who could be offered a chance at the rotation. Now add true freshmen and portal and I believe it will be very good. Position players will more than likely be a complete rebuild.
There isn't a player on this team that comes close to Yorke's experience at 1B. His OB% .437 isn't bad. He does add power to the lineup as well.
I have seen Yamin, Pearson and Serna play 1B and it wasn't great.
Arrambide, Simpson (broke thumb) Dardar were decent there but behind Yorke defensively.
Clauss showed soft hands there, but I don't think he is answer either.
Braun makes the most sense but hasn't played there since a sophomore in HS. He does have talent there though.
Our best option is Yorke. Everyone knows hitting can be a strange thing.
As Lester pointed out, the Rant gets going on a narrative and blows it out of proportion. Armchair QB's like to believe they know more than Jay but you don't.
I'm proud of every player that puts on a LSU uniform. Most fans don't have a clue how hard these young men work. They live baseball. Critiquing a player is fine but crapping on one of our own players is a total lack of class. Choose to build up, not tear down one of our own.

Cade has been a little banged up and he will be back. He's one of the most talented players on the roster.
We need him and if he can return to the form he had in the fall, he's going to be huge for us

I kinda like our recruits trending down. I think it makes it a little easier to get to campus when they are feeling undervalued.
Any chance with Curiel if he keeps dropping?

I got the rankings second hand from a poster who attended one of Jay's luncheons. It was detailed enough that it seemed credible but it is unconfirmed.
We still have NIL. I would assume we do well there.

This is the first year I heard Jay complain. This is the first year under Jay we didn't land a top 10 player. I don't even think we landed a top 20 player.
We have a new AD this year, so we will see if it changes.
There is no way LSU should be ranked 13th in the SEC as far as revenue share. We are the best program in the SEC with the best coach and 12 other SEC universities supported their baseball programs more than us. That is a mistake.

The bottom line is we were ranked like 13th in the SEC as far as revenue share to baseball. So 12 other SEC programs were able to give their baseball programs more money than us. Does that make sense to anyone? We have a HOF coach, 2 national championships in the last 3 years but 12 other schools are more dedicated to their baseball than us? Can you see how that must upset Jay. Arkansas I believe was top with 3 million compared to LSU with 400,000. Do you understand what you can buy in baseball with an extra 2.6 million?
I'm not saying Jay needs 3 million because we probably do have more NIL than most universities. Just let Jay compete for recruits on equal footing. If money is equal Jay can usually win the recruiting battles he wants to.

One of things that make Jay a great coach in this era of baseball is that he's a relentless recruiter. Is Jay not deserving of the same revenue share as other SEC schools? Should he have to recruit with one hand tied behind his back? Give the man the same revenue share as other top programs. He's not asking for more than them. He just wants to compete on equal footing.

LSU8, I believe
The players respond to him. His fire and competitiveness make him a natural leader.

Interesting note: We will have to replace our entire starting infield and outfield, more than likely, after this season. I'm not concerned, but it is interesting.
No shortage of bullpen arms. Really solid group top to bottom. It's going to be interesting to see how Yeskie and Jay manage this in games
Schmidt went on a different level this weekend. After 3 walks in his first inning, he came back and dominated
If he can duplicate that, he will be in the rotation.
We know what Evans can do but so far this fall and spring we haven't seen it.
Moore has been really good fall and spring but he did fade in the fifth inning this weekend.
I know Jay would love to have a lefty in the rotation. Even if Williams doesn't start, he's going to be a weapon.
I'm just a big fan of Noot. I'm real curious what role he carves out this season.

He's the funniest guy on the team and well liked. He will also probably hit in the middle of our lineup
Strikes out. Scrimmage over
Strikes out. Pearson up
I believe it's minor
Grounds out to 2b. Milam up
