I attend an OTF gym that has closed and they have frozen all accounts.

I'm sorry to hear that. The reality of all our situations is starting to sink in.
My oldest niece is set to graduate from high school in May. I'm traveling from Florida up to Indiana for it. I have a bad feeling now that they will either cancel the graduation ceremony entirely or just allow immediate family (parents, siblings). I hate it for her and all the kids in HS and College that are set to graduate. Their Senior years are ruined forever. :(
Hopefully I'm wrong but I'm guessing I won't be traveling to Indiana in May like I thought I would.

Yes with the CDC essentially wanting to shut down the U.S. economy for 8 weeks I think it'll be awhile before we see the bottom.
What companies are you keeping a close eye on? What trading platform/brokerage company do you recommend using?

Dollar cost average? A safer thing to do putting a portion in every week. Lower your cost basis if it keeps going down, and you won't completely miss the recovery spike.
I agree. What stocks do you think I should be looking at? I'm guessing a lot of consumer staple companies?

Right now yes I'm getting a very good discount on the stock.
As part of my 401k my only options are company stock, passive index funds, actively managed funs, retirement date blended funds and cash.
I work for a large company that has taken a big hit and I'm confident it'll get back up to its former price by the end of the year assuming all this virus stuff is contained by the summer. The way I look at it I'm getting in at a significant discount and building a long term position.

Oh I'm not entering right now, but I'm trying to prepare now. Once we get to what seems like a bottom what would be some good strategies?
Also, my 401k is with Fidelity. What brokerage company/trading platforms would you all recommend using?

Entering The Market With $2,000. What to do?
Posted by OceanTiger1 on 3/16/20 at 8:41 am
So this is independent of my 401k (which was at $55,000 and has dropped $10,000 this year to $45,000).
About half my 401k was in cash so I'm waiting to buy stock in my company as well as various Retirement Date Funds and Index Funds.
But besides my 401k I have $2,000 in cash that I could probably use in the market right now. I've been waiting for a market correction to finally hit. I know I couldn't use $2,000 to buy very expensive stocks but what would you do? What lower priced stocks would you look at?

Honestly, I think some of you people failed Civics in high school!
They do run Congress last time I checked and Congress controls the purse strings. Plus they have Governors and Mayors in various areas that can help collapse their local economy. Never mind businessmen like Mike Bloomberg who have friends in high places. I don't doubt at all that some of them would be willing to temporarily lose a couple hundred million dollars or more temporarily to get Trump out of office.
A political party doesn't have to be in control of the Executive Branch to be able to crash the economy. They just have to have the right people in the right places.

All police officers on constant duty. Activation of the national guard. They don't have to have someone on every street, mostly just at the certain points, especially around interstates.
Perhaps even an exemption allowing active duty military to perform police functions.
Automatic jail time for anyone who breaks martial law. State borders shut down. They could even use drones for aerial support. The scary thing is I don't think it would be as hard as you think.

Sadly I think this is the better way to do it. Medical experts are saying we're all going to get it at some point. Just have us all get it and that way we get it out of our system sooner and our system becomes immune.
The social isolation they want us to do is not going to stop this virus at all. It's just going to string the whole thing out and shut down our economy even longer. Even though I'm asthmatic part of me wants the virus just to get it over with.

You mean an order to collapse the economy?
You do realize that there's a large part of our government that would love to do this right? I'm not saying Democrats created the Coronavirus, but they sure are taking advantage of it. They look at this as their way to get Trump out of office so they are doing everything they can to collapse the economy.
Even if you don't believe that, would it really shock you? No one is thinking straight right now. Everyone is panicking and making decisions completely on emotion. And that's especially true for both the federal government and governments at the state and local level.
At this point I absolutely think martial law is coming. Maybe not from the President and Federal Government but I could easily see various state and local governments doing it. People like LaToya Cantrell are having a field day right now knowing they have complete and unchallenged control.

Gum graft surgery for the gum erosion. I actually had the same thing myself about 6 years ago. Significant gum erosion over one tooth. Procedure was easy, took about an hour. Some pain the rest of the day but nothing like when I got my wisdom teeth removed. You should be able to go to work the next day.

I don’t think interstate travel will be enforced because it’d take far too many resources and frankly it’s just a bit crazy. I am preparing to drive the 16 hours it takes to get from Orlando to Houston in the next couple days, whenever they shut down Disney and cancel my flights.
It’s going to suck.
Not related but I actually live in Orlando and work at Disney. I'm hoping they won't close Disney but at this point I think it's almost inevitable. Seems like they are trying to have the whole country shut down for 2 weeks.
What worries me is what will happen pay wise. Will I get paid or just get screwed over? Of course many of us will have that same question.

Easy to stay but this friend has connections. She thinks she can either get us a significantly discounted rate at the Bourbon Orleans or a free concierge level room at the Four Points by Sheraton off Bourbon Street. Both well above what I would typically pay for a hotel. It's taken us 6 months to coordinate a long weekend where we could go.
Obviously I might not be the one deciding, I'll have to see if she wants to risk it or not. Part of me is pretty much "f*ck it, let's go".
New Orleans trip in 2 weeks?
Posted by OceanTiger1 on 3/11/20 at 9:20 pm
Supposed to be taking a friend of mine (who hasn't been to NOLA in 25 years and really doesn't remember it due to all the drinking, lol) to NOLA for a 3 night weekend trip in 2 weeks.
Obviously I'm not nearly as concerned as I would be if it was a trip to Europe or elsewhere out of the country. I have a trip planned for Costa Rica in May but that's another thread. After what President Trump just did with the Europe travel ban I am starting to get nervous.
I don't have a wife or kids so I don't have that to worry about. At this point we are driving from Florida which is looking like a smarter and smarter decision. With that said, is there any realistic chance that interstate travel is banned?
What would you do?

That, to have a few drinks, have some good food and stop at a few ports in the Bahamas, yes.

At least then my taxes might pay for things like emergency services or road repairs. Services I might actually use.

And you realize the majority of the activities are still going to be geared towards children? It's obvious you don't have any worry about COVID-19 since you are willing to hop on a cruise right now.
So since you want to take advantage of the cheaper rates because of this, why wouldn't you take advantage of the cheaper flights right now to visit somewhere else. You can fly to just about anywhere in the Caribbean right now for sub $500 roundtrip and be there in less than 3 hours. There are roundtrip flights to San Juan right now for $101 form Orlando.
You want to go out and be adventurous on your own, you do this. Not sit on a Disney cruise by yourself.
Because there are different types of vacations. Ones that are more about adventure and exploration and ones that are more about relaxation. I actually am going to Costa Rica in May but I do enjoy the occasional vacation where you just relax by the pool with a good drink.

Why are you so offended by me asking a legit question? I was being sincere by asking. I even said I had never been on a cruise ever. And no I don’t go to a restaurant, movie or to bars alone. Just not my personality. I don’t think it’s anything wrong with people that can do those things. I even envy those types. I was just asking the appeal of going solo on a cruise. Just something I’ve never considered.
Sorry, I didn't mean to lash out, but there's been a lot of bashing on this thread. I don't look at going solo on a cruise as any different that going solo on any other type of vacation. There is a certain freedom in going on vacation by yourself. You control the itinerary, you can do what you want and you can even change plans at the last minute. It's a very liberating experience.
The other thing about traveling solo (especially overseas) is that you have no one there to insulate you from the local culture. You are by yourself so you are able to embrace the culture more and blend in with the culture. You maybe talk to strangers you would never talk to if you're with other people. You get a chance to meet some amazing people. I think you grow more as a person traveling solo and it's also the ultimate indulgence.
There are so many places I would've never visited if I had to wait for someone else to go with me. That just wasn't acceptable for me.
Honestly, I can't imagine going a year WITHOUT doing a solo trip. Don't misunderstand me, I enjoy trips with family and friends as well, but at least once a year I do a solo trip.

This might sound weird to you but a ton of people go to Disney, Universal, Busch Gardens, Sea World, etc. without children.
I see plenty of couples without kids, single people, older people who's kids are grown up, etc. It really isn't that uncommon.
Heck a lot of people I talk to who had kids talked about how different the experience was without children, in a good way.

With Disney Cruise Line I just know I'm seeing more employee rates than I've ever seen before. Usually you don't see more than 5 or 6 cruises available and right now 52 cruises are available. That tells me a significant amount of people are cancelling. That's why I'm trying to take advantage of it.
