re: Cat Island/St. Francisville Rut
Posted by JRinNOLA on 1/13/26 at 6:22 am to CerRegKnockoutArtist
We hunt private land in Cat Island and north of Cat Island. Saw alot of rut activity, bucks chasing and on the move around December 30. I hunted with 3 others January 5-7. No one saw a deer. Maybe rut was early this year ?
All private land hunting trails we created through the thick catbryar in the cat island swamp. The deer started using the trails as soon as we cut them. We hunt from ladder stands. Hunted the hills in the morning and swamp in the evening.
4 hunters , 5 hunts , no deer

Shocked we didn’t see a single deer Monday- Wednesday. 4 hunters made 5 hunts and didn’t see a deer. Afternoon temperatures in the 70s. Area 6 in St. Francisville where rut is topically first 2 weeks of January. I’m thinking it was due to the unusual hot weather.
I feel like it starts around Christmas and into first 2 weeks of January. We hunt in St. Francisville.

It can be very hard to get away from all the other hunters. Also the roads are going to be sloppy or unbelievably dusty so bring everything you need so you don’t have to drive around too much. I went 3 times in the last 5 years. I am done with Tensas.

re: Anyone Still Fly Fishing in Louisiana?
Posted by JRinNOLA on 11/23/25 at 6:50 am to Lutcher Lad
I absolutely love fly fishing for bream. I use a white popping bug. I didn’t get out much this summer. I will have to double down this summer to make up for it.

3 of us went Wednesday the 5th. Fished the marsh not too far from Hopedale marina. 8:30 - 2:30 Ended up with 28 keeper trout. Not that many throw backs. Caught on live shrimp and marker 54 shrimp. The fish are inside. You just have to pick your days to fish.
I use the ratchet straps but also add a 6” piece of metal pipe hanger strap wrapped around each side of the stand and run a deck screw through it into the tree. Also keeps the stand from moving around.

Lansky with 5 different grade of stones will make any knife razor sharp in 5 minutes.
White lake duck hunting
Posted by JRinNOLA on 10/26/25 at 8:03 am
Anyone have any experience duck hunting at White Lake ? I was invited to duck hunt there mid November. Any information appreciated.
I started rebuilding my reels myself. Look up specific reel on YouTube. It’s a lot easier than you would think. No special tools needed. I rebuilt all my spinning reels and 2 6500c3 bait casters. Just order some reel oil and grease on amazon.
When your tailgate is down camera doesn’t get you license plate and if you are towing a boat just take a minute to pull over in Leeville and cover or remove your license plate. I am not paying $21.00
I fished last Wednesday the 9th. Caught 11 keepers trout and 100 throw backs mostly on artificial in the marsh very close to the boat launch. They are inside now.
Inshore saltwater bait casting reel recommendation
Posted by JRinNOLA on 10/5/25 at 12:54 pm
I have always fished for redfish and trout with a spinning reel, but it seems a lot of people are using bait casters these days. What is a good all-around bait caster for saltwater fishing?
Take a boy hunting today and you won’t be hunting the streets for him tomorrow
In mid June I was surf fishing on Elmer’s Island with my nephew. He fished artificial and I had live shrimp. I caught a limit of keepers and he couldn’t catch a fish. He was switching baits a lot but didn’t catch a thing until he switched to live shrimp.
Live bait or artificial ? Louisiana inshore saltwater
Posted by JRinNOLA on 9/21/25 at 9:41 am
I have always been a live bait fisherman but getting tired of paying .50 cents a piece for shrimp. I think it’s time to switch to artificial. How many of you only fish artificial and what are some of your go to baits that work ?
re: Budget Deer Scope

Tasco scopes. Been around for ever. Very inexpensive and work fine. I paid less than $100.00 for the 3-9 x 40 on my Remington 270. Works great.
Pecan wood fer the smoker
Posted by JRinNOLA on 9/2/25 at 7:34 am
I cut up a branch about 8 inches in diameter of pecan wood that fell from my pecan tree in a storm. Can I use all of it or just the heart wood for smoking ?
