re: Worst kind of snob?

Food snob.

I absolutely love to cook and eat. I decline to call myself a "foodie". Most foodies are obnoxious brand whores and followers that either think Michelin stars or Guy Fieri are the only arbiter of good food.

I cannot stand Michelin Stars or Fieri.

I really enjoy cooking for my friends and family and taking going out to eat at new places, whether a Louisiana gas station or a nicer experience.

Still never made it to Supper CLub Baton Rouge.

It really didn't.

Amen. How bloody out of touch do you have to be to think the American Dream is an old farm in the south of France?

Ha I feel like I saved a decent bit compared to Russell Mocs.

I hope I can wear these for a long time and maybe give them to my son some day.

Boyt - Gokey boots

Posted by tadman on 3/2/26 at 7:55 am
Y'all, been trying to break-in a pair of Gokey boots last week. Had a couple fit questions I emailed in. The guy called me a day later and talked me through the whole process of break-in and what might be a red flag to upsize.

After that he told me I could send them in for trade to upsize, no questions asked.

It is rare to see that level of service these days. Really a nice surprise.

This is the company that bought Gokey boots from Orvis and also makes a lot of other nice leather and canvas bags, holsters, jackets, etc... seems they are really doing things right these days. I will be a repeat customer.
Shunk Oyster House. Not a rooftop but a large open patio, can catch a really nice breeze. Their seasonal grouper entree is usually a somewhat innovative hash of sorts including fresh vegetables and a nice pan sauce. It's a go-to for me when in the area.

Secret Thai. Go easy on the hot stuff even if you crave hot food.

Ryze Mushroom Coffee

Posted by tadman on 2/27/26 at 9:56 am
Anybody try these newfangled mushroom coffees? Ryze seems to have the biggest marketing. Promises all kind of health benefits but the research seems to be lacking.

Any firstshand experience, pros and cons?

If you've ever worked with the spanish, most of them have "time off" as a very loose term. They get time off for time off. They leave work early. They take long lunches with lots of wine. They show up at the crack of 9a. They have no concept of deadlines or due dates. They take it easy on days that in in "Y" such as mondaY, tuesdaY...
30 days in local rural jail is a vacation, not punishment.
Some are really fun, some are kinda lame. All depends on the organizers at the chapter level. We have one around here that has a caterer that is really awesome and some decent prizes. I used to go alone but started bringing my wife and son. I'd see if you know some local attendees from the past that recomend or not.

We have anotehr one an hour away. I went once and it was kinda lame. Then the same four guys won all the games. Everybody there was murmuring that it was rigged and the chapter officers were giving the guns to their friends.

Finally I happened to be in Birmingham when they had an event at Good People brewing and it was a blast. Beer, cigars, good food... if you are in BHM I recommend.

The Soprano kids, you genuinely want to smack them.

Didn't Mantra just move out there from Metry? Some really solid Indian food if so.

Do we know they aren't already posting among us?

(b) I'd love to hear what a dolphin has to say about SFP or TulaneLSU. There's got to be dolphins smarter than either of them.
Pursell Farm. Not sure how old your kids are but if they golf or shoot you'll have a blast. An hour from some great food in BHM as well. Could fly into ATL and maybe 90 minutes drive.

The UK & France will probably condemn it

The French have alreadys surrendured to Iran and Starmer is arresting anybody not wearing a burqa.

It's likely the fallout could've been much greater than execution. Many Valkyrie conspirators were tortured and hung crudely and slowly, and their families and associates followed.

It was an especially dark time in a dark decade.

All 50 states fit inside the Top 80 when ranked against other countries.

Only 30 countries in the world have a higher GDP per capita than Mississippi (the lowest ranked state)

Only 16 countries in the world rank above Louisiana.

This is so true. I always get a chuckle when I hear elitist douchebags throw shade at places like MIssissippi and Alabama.

(a) they are still light years ahead of most of the world. If said elitist dbags would travel anywhere other than influencer hotspots they would realize this;

(b) the whole GDP per capita thing is a bit of a misnomer, too. It works like an average. You have some places in AL, MS, LA that are pretty poor, but that doesnt' mean the places I've lived in those states are poor or crummy. My schools are great, my neighborhood very clean and quiet, my restaurants decent...

I'm not losing a lot of sleep about lower GDP/pc than Illinoist and New York. I'm also not worried about my NFL team leaving the state nor a 10pct property tax increase because my leadership is a bunch of brain-dead socialists.

So why do people have these outrageous cars on the street, let alone the track?

Madison Avenue advertising...

I'm totally puzzled as well why everybody wants a car they can't afford and has a six year note, mostly to fit needs they don't really have. "i need three rows" "I need all wheel drive" "I need to sit up high" "I need a truck"

Yeah guess what, circa pre-2000 none of that stuff existed for the most part. You could get three rows in a minivan I guess, but it was rarely used.

That said I am perfectly happy to let millions of people buy stuff they don't need so that I can buy it used, for cash, totally depreciated, and enjoy it just as much or even more.

I’m not really aware of any in Atlanta otter than Brooks Brothers, which can handle the suit part, but isn’t really the kind of spot OP’s referencing. Got any recs?

I don't love Sid Mashburn but I think ATL is his home city. It's overpriced and tries a bit too hard but there are certainly some good staples there.

Miller Brothers / Miller Collective in Buckhead, very solid joint.

H Stockton is an older school spot that recently moved. Last time I was there the clerks were a bit uppity and I overheard them really grinding an axe over politics. That has no place in retail so I dont' go there anymore but you make like it.

I think there's also a Billy Reid and Onward Reserve in the area. Billy Reid is a good southern brand but also a bit fashion-forward for my personal taste. Onward Reserve is a growing brand based out of Thomasville with a local founder and operator. Seems like a good bunch and I've bought stuff there. I don't know how much they get into suiting and tailoring if that's what your're after. It's more of a "what to wear to the country club" spot, but that's considered top notch attire at many banks and lawfirms these days.
