re: Franchise Lost: Hilton removing MN hotel that canceled bookings for ICE & DHS workers
Posted by frequent flyer on 1/6/26 at 10:52 am to Shexter
I guess it's going to be a Best Western or something......
Meaning the hotel rates and bookings just collapsed. And most likely Hilton is still going to want to find another operator to work with in that area since it's clearly a fairly new build in an area similar to Industriplex with a lot of companies nearby.

You pay for the franchise for their booking systems, loyalty systems that drive traffic, and their preferred rates for major corporate users.
If you don't like one of those corporate users....why did you spend $ millions on that franchise?

re: Valero shutting down CA refinery at $1b loss- CA in real trouble
Posted by frequent flyer on 1/5/26 at 11:34 am to Covingtontiger77
I think the Phillips 66 one in Wilmington was pretty big 145,000 barrels/day. Valencia has a few other refineries but Valero is big.
Between the two closures, that's probably between 1/5 to 1/4 of California's refining capacity. It will be felt, and it will probably end up with more pressure for additional pipelines in the region.

re: What was the biggest mistake of each of Louisiana's 5 biggest cities?

New Orleans: ?
Not aggressively focusing on white collar economic development beyond tourism; allowing major oil/gas companies to leave for Houston 50 years ago was a big deal. Corruption, urban decay, and high costs of living were all major factors that lead to the initial leak of that industry to Texas.
Also - New Orleans East was the worst possible timing. Seemed like the right move at the time to compete with the Texas cities or Atlanta with affordable housing. But then the bottom fell out of public schools and New Orleans east went to hell very quickly.
I'd also say that New Orleans didn't move fast enough to demolish housing projects and allowed major crime issues to linger.
quote:
Baton Rouge: No loop?
Letting the feds carry on a 5 decade long desegregation case that destroyed neighborhood schools and public schools in general has hurt everyone in this region and the economic competitiveness of the area as a whole.
Failing to take infrastructure seriously until it's too late - including both flood protection and transportation. That's especially true now since affordable housing and decent public schools are primarily a suburban offering at this point, so more links to the suburbs are needed. More, improved links to the northern and western suburbs would help a lot; plus another Amite river crossing somewhere around Hooper Road. It would also help if Livingston and Ascension finally got their shite together on their own local infrastructure.
Improved highways in this region (including a new bridge) + shoveling cash into LSU would help Baton Rouge and the state of Louisiana in general. The Baton Rouge metro area is growing despite all of these mistakes in part because of deep water river access. Most of that industrial growth will be on the west side of the river moving forward. West Baton Rouge needs to develop more housing and improved public schools, but more importantly a new bridge is needed somewhere around Plaquemine.
Baton Rouge also needs to undo what Broom did and focus on downtown again. Following up a very good mayor (Holden) with Broom was a disaster. Now your current leader will spend his entire term fixing Broom's budget problems instead of showing results with infrastructure.
quote:
Shreveport: ?
Over reliance on casinos and failing to develop a robust industrial base and market itself as a durable goods manufacturing center. General Motors built a massive factory there in 1981, and that facility cranked out a lot of very popular compact pickup trucks and SUVs for decades before being shuttered in the recession. Bad luck.....but more could have been done to develop other manufacturing facilities like that over the years.
Right now Shreveport is, IMO, in the worst shape of all Louisiana cities. I'm very bearish on its future. I'm not sure if it can be saved unless a new industry is developed there somehow. But it's on track to be Louisiana's Flint if we can't figure this out.
It's got good infrastructure bones, but it just isn't recovering from some major hits lately.
quote:
Lafayette: Not diversifying from O&G?
I think Lafayette did a lot of things right, but was a victim of poor timing. The 1980s oil bust really hurt. But IMO this city is exactly what it needs to be in 2025. Improved highway infrastructure could help Lafayette a lot, along with the rest of cajun country.
Moving forward, Lafayette needs to find another niche but try not to over expand or grow too fast.
quote:
Lake Charles: Not doing gambling earlier?
Lake Charles (at least its metro area) has been a boom town for a couple of decades until it was hit by 2 major hurricanes in one year. I think they need to continue doing what they are doing and try hard to develop a home grown industrial supplier business and lure some engineering companies to the area.
I'd try to improve aesthetics of the city and lakefront as much as possible and draw in as many people as they can to the city core.
I think Lake Charles will be a much bigger metro area in 50 years than it is today. The question is if it will be suburban growth with a dead downtown core or if the whole area thrives.

I think it’s trashy that a business model depends almost exclusively on immigrant labor and special treatment from an environmental regulatory perspective. Or that they have to release this much ash every year onto someone else’s property to stay tits up.
If they don’t hire locals anymore and they clearly don’t care about what they are doing to the local air quality….why should our government continue protectionist policies and price floors for them?
A lot easier to look the other way if more locals were employed by this industry. But it’s not. The LA1 sugar cane towns like Donaldsonville, Morganza, etc. are declining, not growing.

That’s when the cashier started fast-talking, finger-pointing, acting alarmed. Full blown Karen shite.
So he demanded to speak to the owner and called someone else a Karen?

It’s pretty crazy we still do this in 2025, considering all the “green” incentives over the last ~15 years. Brazil has 20x’s the sugarcane the US does and they stopped burning.
Louisiana loves selective enforcement of environmental laws.
My favorite is when there's a burn ban because of dry weather (like there was the last two seasons in parts of south Louisiana), but somehow the sugar cane industry gets an exemption.
Or the fact that we have to spend a fortune on lighter, aluminum, environmentally friendly vehicles with all this crap under the hood that will break. But it's totally cool if we just light several parishes on fire every year.

3/4 ton gassers are great. 3/4 ton diesels have a narrow usable margin, even the newer ones with over 10k GVWR.
Supposedly the 6.6L gas engine will be available in the half ton GM trucks starting in 2027. And I'm guessing it will be the high end models only but I'd absolutely go for it if it were an option.
Trump neutering the IIHS/EPA's ability to regulate fuel economy is bringing the concept of "heavy half ton" back. That's something we haven't really seen from anybody since the T800 generation half ton GM trucks 20 years ago. And it's fantastic for people who have a heavier boat or trailer to haul but don't need the harsh ride and heavy payload capacity of a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck.
They'll have a 5.7L V8 that will still be overkill for most half ton truck buyers. Supposedly port and direct injection.
Unfortunately I think they will expand availability of the 2.7L Turbomax engine to take over the market that used to be covered by the 5.3L V8. It's a solid engine with very few warranty claims despite coming standard with a 100k mile coverage. But it's a big displacement 4 pot and it sounds like an overboosted 4 cylinder because it is.

F-250 rides way worse than a half ton.
But everything else you said is spot on. I also don't trust the half ton motors from Ford at the moment, where I'm a big fan of the 7.3L V8 gas motor in the F-250.
But I'm still going GMC over Ford right now.

Did you factor in that the gas burner gets 11-15 mpg and the diesel gets 16-21 mpg? That's without towing
The 6.6L Gas in the GM can get up to about 15-17 without towing on 87 octane.
When towing....yeah the diesel is way better. On flat highway without a trailer, the difference isn't as much as I thought.
I wouldn't touch the diesel with that added complexity and emissions equipment unless you tow regularly. It's an obscenely expensive option to purchase upfront, and it is vastly more expensive to keep on the road long term.

GMC with the 6.6 Gas
ETA: The Duramax is great, but it's like a $12K option. Wouldn't touch it unless you regularly tow 12k+

In some ways Trump has exceeded expectations.
But yeah him pussyfooting around with H1B and not actually draining the swamp (and pushing to get DOGE cuts codified and permanent) has been frustrating. Those were big issues for me.
