So is the implication here that Michigan and UC Berkeley are no longer considered public ivies? Because I’d always put UVA and UNC in that category
The term "Public Ivy gets thrown around a lot, but it was actually created by a guy from Yale in 1985 who wrote a book called: Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities.
He named Michigan, Cal, Texas, UVA, UNC, William & Mary, Miami (Ohio) and Vermont as the 8 public universities where someone could get an Ivy League-level education.
Now, people ignore that origin, and there are 20+ schools claiming to be a Public Ivy.

People forget that affirmative action wasn't just about race. It was about geography, income, first-gen status. Remove it and the student body shifts back to wealthy kids from good zip codes. That's what these charts show. Not opinion. Just data.
I have a son who graduated from a US News Top 5 school last May. No one in my family has ever gradated from a private university before. I'm not wealthy. We didn't buy a building or use our contacts to secure a pardon for the dean's nephew.
My son was not alone. There are a lot of non-rich, self-motivated really bright kids at this university. People freak out about college admissions because, in their eyes, their kid who once got a 94 on a science test should cakewalk into an IvyPlus university. People don't want to come to terms with the fact that their kid likely isn't in the top 1% of intelligence, so they look for any and every excuse, rather than accepting the truth.

So much white trash. Texas should have joined the B1G.

Haha LSU has one of the highest acceptance rates in the country.
.....and the only way to bring down that acceptance rate is by having more people apply.
re: University set to charge students nearly six figures per year

No one should be paying 100K/year for GW. Even if you are crazy rich, the ROI just doesn't make sense.
If your kid gets into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT or Stanford, you take every loan possible to get them that degree.
If you have planned for this and/or are well-off and can cash flow it, the other IvyPlus schools (the 8 ivies, MIT, Stanford, Duke & UChicago) are worth it.
Outside of that, unless your state flagship is straight garbage, the ROI for other schools just isn't there.

Like many schools, LSU promotes itself in a variety of ways, and is very liberal with application fee wavers, because they want as many students as possible applying. Why? So they can reject more students.
This gives the appearance of the school being more selective and this drives up the median standardized test scores.
Like many schools, LSU is gaming the rankings. Every instituion does it in some way and every institution denies it.

I saw the bonfire in person in the late eighties and early nineties. It was the coolest thing I've ever seen associated with Texas A&M. The tragedy broke my heart. I'm not gonna watch some video where a guy is using it for clicks.

If you were famous & rich, you would need to take some common sense steps. Perhaps, on the same acerage, you have a house for another family member who can keep an eye on things. You have a top tier security system and maybe periodic security guard visits. You have to do something.

Let's be real, we are all a bit surprised that a wealthy/famous person allowed their elderly parent to live alone in what seems to be a semi-desolate area.
Isn't it common sense to have her in a gated neighborhood with security or in a luxury condo building with security? That is what I would do. Wouldn't you?
re: Rice University
Posted by SneezyBeltranIsHere on 3/27/26 at 9:40 am to Decker
Would I go 400K in debt to send my kid to Rice? No. I would for Stanford/Harvard/MIT/Yale/Princeton. If you have planned for this and/or you can cash flow the payments, it will be the best money you have ever spent.
It is upsetting to many people, but your kid will have opportunities that won't be available to others.
My youngest son graduated from a US News top 5 university last May. In a funky job market with most recent grads struggling to find anything related to their major, he is making a strong 6-figure base salary in a job he loves. There is no doubt where he got his degree played a huge part in this. I never felt better than when I made those tuition payments.

All universities have some gay students.
Only one university forces a culture of violent homoeroticism on the entire student body.

I live in the Bainbridge Island area. There is a massive sub base nearby. Most of the Uber drivers around here are Navy guys making money in their spare time. I've talked to several "nukes" and they all hate it.I was surprised by this...it always sounded like an interesting gig to me.

When Will Campbell was drafted ahead of Kelvin Banks, it made no sense to me. It makes even less sense now.
