Is a midrange two an easier shot, even if it’s contested or well guarded? Is a 26’ three a more difficult shot if it’s wide open? Just legitimate questions.
Obviously shooting percentages will increase proportionally as distance to the basket decreases, but that isn’t necessarily the only consideration. Is the percentage so significant that a shooter is statistically better taking an 15-18’ than a 22’ shot?
Programs that rely heavily on analytics (and even those that don’t) have entire organizations run these numbers for them. It’s not like a coach is in his office calculating shot values. And the guys that are actually determining shot values have access to more than enough data to emphatically support it statistically.

I’ve really enjoyed the early season Houston games for the past few years. It’s been a great barometer for the team’s capabilities moving forward. It’s a prime time game in Las Vegas tournament as well, which should add to the excitement.
I haven’t watched Houston play outside of the Auburn game, but they appear to be a stereotypical Kelvin Sampson team, through and through. Talented and deep with a stifling defense and a better than typical Houston offense to boot.
Alabama has played a tougher schedule thus far, but it’s hard to play that card 4 games into the season. I know we’ve been a little sloppy with TO’s to this point and that’s probably my largest concern going into this game. It’s so cliché, but we’ll have to do a good job taking care of the ball in this one.
Based on their tempo ranking, I’m assuming they like to play a half court game. Hopefully that plays to our size and pace advantages, but we’ll have to make the good looks we’ve been missing a lot of so far this year to hurt them in transition (if we get the opportunities).
It should be a fun game and it would be nice to get another fun win to start off an extremely tough stretch during OOC play. I’m a little surprised to see Houston favored, especially with a win prediction percent as high 70%+. I think it’s easily a 50/50 game at worst if we can show up and efficiently play to our strengths, but we’re still young and learning to play as a group.
Thoughts or input from anyone that’s watched more non-Alabama games than me this season? Keys to the game or guys to watch? I’m a little lost without the megathread (RIP), so I thought a pre-game discussion thread might get the ball rolling.

Prescribing OC or any other opioid for headaches is borderline malpractice. There are so many better options for treating migraines that it almost sounds like he was already seeking narcotics at that point. If that’s the case, being in a situation with direct access to the medical staff and a six figure salary was probably the worst place for him to be.
Also, the level of usage he reached is astounding. He was taking anywhere from 250-4,800 mg/day, although it was likely something closer to 300-1,500mg. For reference, a cancer patient with chronic pain might have been prescribed 240mg/day after extended treatment. Not to mention If he was buying that many pills off the street, he would have been spending tens of thousands of dollars a month on narcotics. Even worse, after relapsing, he thought he was using the same medication he abused in the past, but was buying counterfeit OC laced with fentanyl.
It’s sad and difficult to believe that no one noticed he had a problem, but in a world where winning is everything, it was an afterthought. He’s lucky he survived and it’s amazing that he’s made it far enough to be able to share his story. He was always a polarizing figure, so if he can use that same drive to help other people that are struggling with similar situations, he’s doing far better work than he ever did in a weight room or practice field.

Alabama as good at overwhelming the other team with talent, not atmosphere. I don’t think many Bama fans would even argue that it’s a seriously difficult road environment for the majority of a game. It gets load sometimes, sure. But it doesn’t stay that way all day. Texas won because they played better.

It’s not the losses I was referencing. It was the close games against less talented teams. Look at any of the NC winners from the SEC for the last decade and you will notice plenty of regular season games decided by 7 points or less before getting a BYE against the B12 winner in the playoffs.

It was interesting that both teams were “successful” immediately after joining the conference, although neither has amounted to much since. They didn’t really amount to much during those seasons either, tbh.
ATM rode Maziel’s coattails to a Heisman Trophy and… a tie for 2nd place in their division. They haven’t won more than nine games in a season since. Lightning in a bottle.
Missouri won a pitiful East division two years running, only to get trounced by Alabama and Auburn in the SECCG both seasons. Then, with all that momentum, they didn’t win a conference game for the next two years.
Both teams are working on their third head coach since joining the conference. I expect UT and OU to generally be more competitive, but it’s ridiculous to think either team will come in dominate in any particular fashion. Even the best teams from the conference’s recent NC winners… UGA, Bama, LSU have had nailbiters against “inferior” teams during the regular season. Some of the most talented teams to ever play didn’t make it through unscathed.
Anyone expecting a road game in Auburn, Knoxville, Oxford, Gainesville, Starkville, etc. to be similar to playing at TCU or OSU is in for a surprise. Thats what makes the schedules hard, not necessarily the talent disparity. Play Bama, LSU, UGA, then turn around and play a pretty good squad on the road with 150,000 people on campus.
And say, just for fun, that one of the new guys has a great year and wins the division. Their reward? Not some chump, but UGA or some other top 5 team lined up across the field in Atlanta. Best of luck “lighting up” anything immediately.

Big win for Riley today. Holding off Scheffler, Morikawa, and Bradley has to be a huge confidence booster. Colonial is no joke of a tournament either. Tough track and tough competition. Happy that Riley was able to finish strong. RTR!

Riley has a four shot lead that could have been two or three more, so that’s quite a cushion. He had it to six shots at one point today before making a couple bogeys in the middle of his round. He’s got the game to hold off Scheffler though, especially the way Scottie has been putting this week.
Also, Riley already has a win on Tour at the Zurich with Nick Hardy. This would be his first individual win since his two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour. He lost in a playoff a year or two ago to Sam Burns as well, so he’s been in the hunt before.
Side note - Robby Shelton is solo 5th right now. He had a rough couple years after leaving UA, but he was an absolute stud HS and college. Good to see him playing well again.

I haven’t posted much in the basketball thread this year after following it daily for as long as I can remember. Life has its ways sometimes, I suppose.
I won’t regale everyone with more stories of Gottfried, Grant, and Avery; and won’t dwell on opportunities lost over and over again with more talented teams we’ve had in this past. It’s time to celebrate a little, not reminisce.
We finally broke through. Finally shattered the glass ceiling of generations worth of Alabama basketball fans’ expectations. We always lose the big one. We always shite the easy one away. We always lose the key player or miss the shot that would have made the difference. Throw a ball out of bounds or inexplicably miss our last 18 FT attempts.
And of all the years, of all the teams, of all the times we expected it and didn’t get it, this was the one. It’s so amazing that it’s almost laughable. A ragtag bunch of newcomers, an entirely fresh staff, a few young guys with talent, one guy leftover with enough leadership to make you think we might be competitive, and Nate Oats left standing. You never know when your number is going to get called or when your moment is going to come, but it’s a pretty good (if not corny) analogy for the way we’ve won games in this tournament and this team as a whole. Nelson, Rylan, Stephenson, MoD, Pringle, Sears… everybody has had a moment. Hoping for a few more to come.
I absolutely hate comparing basketball to football. It came up so often that it was an infuriating and insulting comment on the basketball program as a whole. It was always, “this team reminds me of Saban’s team in 20XX” or “this season feels like the SEC Championship team back when” or something the occasional football fan would pop in and drop off after a big moment.
And for all that annoyance, last night was the first time since Tebow cried on that sideline in Atlanta in 2009 that I felt that kind of enjoyment about a victory in any game of any sport. It wasn’t just a win or a FF banner, it was finally doing it. Finally getting the thing you knew was possible, but seemed like it wouldn’t ever come to fruition.
So, for everybody still carrying the torch in here, keep fighting the good fight. Happy Easter. And as for UCONN, well… They can get it too.

What does killer mean? If you are suggesting they are afraid of the moment check out the last ballgame. It's all about matchups with this team. If they can play with pace and the refs stop teams from cross-checking and body-slamming, this team will have a chance. It's a team basically made up of small college guys as their leaders and their most talented players are just freshmen. Nate Oats is the difference.
Killers. Guys that seize the moment and come up clutch. Nobody said Alabama didn’t have leaders, although they’re a little short on those too. Bama has a bunch of good, team guys. Outside of Sears, I’m not sure anyone can be a “killer” reliably. He’s also the most consistent leader on this year’s team.
That being said, UNC has the horses to create some problems for Bama. The rebounding issues will be a problem with Bacot out there. He’s going to dominate, regardless of outcome. Without a stellar shooting night, I can’t come up with a ton of positive matchups for Bama in the this game. Still hate the thought of losing to UNC, ever.

UK looking pretty good at the right time. It’s been a while since a Cal team was scary in March.
Ironically, I’m not sure if UK fans are happy about it or upset at the timing. A good finish this season likely gives him some breathing room to coast for a couple more years.

Jackson could ball too. I remember McNabb throwing up bombs and just thinking “where the hell is that going?”, only for DJ to run underneath it from nowhere and coast for a TD.

USC has had a great year and they’re consistent on both sides of the ball, but the top half of the league is full of good teams. UK and UA have defensive issues, but can score with anybody. I think Florida has a hard time with any of the top 4. It looks like a race between AU and UT at the moment. Pearl has traditionally mailed it in during the conference tournament at AU, even when they had the best team. Barnes has been similar in underperforming in the SECT, but he did get one a couple seasons ago.
I think it’s going to be the best conference tournament in a long time and I don’t know what the hell is going to happen. Should be fun.

Alabama has never been fined for storming a court/field. It doesn’t happen. Byrne was trying to prove a point, not prevent an incident. He’s been on a war path against fans leaving the stands since WF/Duke last week.

What are reasonably expecting the conference winner’s record to be at this point? We have top teams dropping games they shouldn’t, but you can’t count on that regularly, right?
I haven’t looked at every team’s schedule, but the way things are going right now, I’m not sure any team makes it through the conference schedule with less than 4 losses. I don’t see any 16-2 or 15-3 teams right now. It’s going to be an interesting situation in February and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 4-5 teams in the mix.

Where is this coming from? Any Alabama fan will tell you Saban was the best recruiter in college football for a long time… Alabama gave him the resources to continue to be the best recruiter, hire the best staff, maintain the best facilities. The kids wanted to play for Saban, nobody is questioning that? Alabama gave Saban whatever he needed to get those kids to win championships. Both parties were committed to excellence and it was a great fit for everyone involved.
Pointing out that a HS recruit would want to play for the best college football coach ever, as if that’s a bad thing, is just stupid as shite. It’s obvious. Of course they did. It was a fast track to the NFL, which is really what these kids are looking for anyway. It was mutually beneficial.
You think Zion wanted to go play for Duke? Or could it have been because K was there? All the kids Cal pulled to Lexington wanted to play for Kentucky? Or wanted Cal to get them to the NBA and try to win a trophy during their 1 year in school?
High profile recruits want to win, get drafted, and play pro ball, so they go play for the guys that can get them there. They don’t play for schools anymore. They play for their careers.
If DeBoer proves he can be successful at Alabama and compete for the conference and playoff berths, Alabama’s AD will support him in the same manner. If Saban’s tenure at Alabama has proven anything, it’s that when the right coach is in town, Alabama football can still be a dominant force. It might be now or it might be 30 years from now, but the two most successful football coaches to ever walk a college sideline both worked in Tuscaloosa and you think that’s a coincidence?

Well, that’s silly. I think everybody expected Saban and even Kelly to do well when hired because of success at previous stops. Why would you exclude a coach’s entire career when evaluating him against his peers.
